Phoebe was a daughter of JOHN PEARCY and MARY ETHRIDGE. History has it that Griffin Newton Sanders was called "Newt" In the Sanders burial plot at Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston, MO., there is a large tombstone with the following inscription: Griffin N. Sanders 1842-1905 and Phoebe A. Sanders 1848-1922. And, another one with the names, John and Johnnie Sanders. Although there are only two headstones in the Oak Grove Cemetery to represent the Sanders family there are more of the Sanders family buried there. Lula Cooper, a granddaughter and William Andrew Cooper, a g-grandson (my brother) are also buried in this Sanders Plot at Oak Grove. On the 1870 census, Mississippi County, MO., Griffin Newton Sanders, is listed as living on the farm of a David Baker. I think that the Sanders, the Baker, the Pearcy and McCuiston families came to Mississippi County, MO about the same time 1870 census listed the following: David Baker 41M farmer b. Sanders, wife Phoebe, two daughters, Hannah E. and Lona M., along with his mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth (Etheridge) Pearcy, were living on a farm together in Trigg county. I have pictures of Eli, Carl and Earl passed down from my grandparents and my aunt Lula Cooper, with the spelling as Stephenson. Also correspondence from their granddaughter, Mary Virginia. ii. June 20, 1919, Anniston, MO; Theora married: THOMAS ANDREW COOPER, on April 19, 1896, at Anniston, MO. Theora Alice Sanders was born in Crittenden county, KY Jan 16, 1881. She had a brother and two sisters. Her brother John and his wife, Johnnie, raised her son John Thomas Cooper, after she and her husband died. Theora's mothers maiden name was Pearcy. Theora's had a niece, Gladys Cox, that lived in Sikeston, MO, and died in 1980. and a nephew named Miner Cobb, that also lived in Sikeston, MO. Theora's , according to John Thomas Cooper's birth certificate had a total of 6 children, three of which must have died at an early age, or were born dead. She was 31 years old and Thomas was 45 years old when my father John Thomas was born. When John was about 3 years old his family moved to Mississippi county Missouri. On Dec 24 1905 he married Johnnie Gertrude McCuiston. For 11 years they lived in Paducah, KY, where John was cashier for Paducah Light & Power. They returned to Missouri about 1920 and worked at farming until John retired in 1967. Uncle John, as we all called him is buried beside his first wife, Johnnie, in Oak Grove cemetery, Charleston, MO. John was my father, John Thomas Cooper's uncle. When my father's parents died he went to live with Uncle John Sanders on his farm near East Prairie, MO. Uncle John was very active in church (Deacon, Song leader, and teacher). After Aunt Johnnie Sanders died in 1955 (nursing home in Sikeston, MO),In 1960, Uncle John Sanders married a Mrs. Rien,( a widow with a son, Herb), that worked at Hummels Drugstore in Charleston, MO. Herb is about my age and was a grade ahead of me in Charleston High School. John had a niece named Gladys Cox and a nephew named Miner Cobb. Obituary in "The Enterprise-Courier" of Charleston, MO September 19, 1968.------Funeral services for John T. Sanders, 81, were held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday in the New Bethel Baptist Church, with Rev. Homer Stallings conducting the last rites. Mr. Sanders died Friday afternoon at the Delta Hospital in Sikeston, after an illness lasting several months. Mr. Sanders was born near Clinton, KY, May 3, 1887, son of the late Newton and Phoebe Sanders. They moved to the New Bethel neighborhood in Mississippi county when Mr. Sanders was six years old. In 1905 he was married to Miss Johnnie McCuiston, who died in 1956. For 11 years they lived in Paducah, where he was cashier of the Paducah Light and Power Company. They returned to Missouri in 1926, and he engaged in farming until 1967, when he retired. He was a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Sikeston, and was a deacon in the New Bethel Baptist Church for more than 50 years. In 1966 he was elected "Man of the Year" by the New Bethel Brotherhood. He was for many years moderator of the Charleston Baptist Association, and was clerk of that organization until 1960 when he resigned. In 1960 he married Mrs. Herbert Rien, who survives. Also surviving are a stepson, Herbert Rien Jr., Cerba Puerto Rico; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Connie Francis, DeSoto; a nephew, J.T. Cooper of Sikeston, who was reared in his home; a niece, Mrs. Gladys Cox of Sikeston; and other nephews and nieces. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Greer and Mrs. J. Ronald Fischer of Cape Girardeau; Mr. and Mrs. Barger Cooper of Muncie, IN; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dearhart, Mrs. Nell Howard, Mrs. Hortense Long, Mrs. John Weyer, and Mrs. J.B. Chumbler of Paducah; Mr and Mrs. Bill Williams and Miss Pamala Willaims of Viburnum; Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Francis of DeSota; and Mr. and Mrs. Brady Carney of Dexter. John and Johnnie had no children. March 1955----------The auditorium, balcony, and dining hall of the New Bethel Church were filled to overflowing Sunday, at 2p.m. when funeral services held for Mrs. Johnnie Gertrude Sanders, 67, of RFD 3, who died Thursday, March 3, at 1:20a.m. at the Bel Air Nursing Home in Sikeston, where she was a patient six months. Rev. Rufus Noisworthy, pastor, and Rev. A.B. Cooper, former pastor, officiated. Music was rendered by the choir and soloist W. Moray Gaty, who sang "When They Ring Those Golden Bells", with Miss Marilyn Knupp pianist and accompanist. The alter was blanked with many floral arrangements. Internment was in the family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery with Nunnelee services. Mrs. Sanders, a resident of this community the past fifty three years, was born April 10, 1887 in Murry, KY., the daughter of the late Henry C. and Mary Dodd McCuiston. She had been in failing health for the past year. Her death was due to a stroke. Mrs. Sanders was active in the Mississippi county Women's Democratic Club, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Airline Extension Club and New Bethel Baptist Church of which she was a faithful member. She took part in the W.M.U., served as a teacher in the Sunday School and as a leader was a great inspiration to the young people of the church. She leaves her husband, John T. Sanders, to whom she was united in marriage December 24, 1905; and one sister, Mrs. Hontas Fox of this city.
