Mr. Smith and his son, Elmer Smith, brought two loads of hay from his farm, southwest of here. Friday morning, and was loading it into the car for shipment in the railroad yard. Mr. Smith had finished unloading and started to drive across the tracks over into town just as No. 1, a passenger train, was coming in. The train is due at 11:18, and it is supposed that Mr. Smith did not think of a train coming in at that time. As his horses moved on the track a shrill whistle was given from the engine to attract his attention, but it was too late. It is supposed that Mr. Smith thought he could make the distance. The engine struck between the horses and the wagon, Mr. Smith and the back part of the wagon going to the west side. One horse was killed, its neck being broken, and the other horse was badly injured, but the veterinary called to care for the animal believes its life can be saved. Mr. Smith was taken to the office of Dr. Kessler to be cared for. His injuries are internal and the physicians are unable to tell how they may result. He was taken to Ensworth Hospital in St. Joseph at 4:30 o'clock that afternoon by Dr. Stuckle of Clyde, who was summoned to attend to his injuries. The last report we have of the injured man as we go to press, is: that his condition is much improved, and his recovery almost complete. Additional Comments: Husband of Jane Holmes. Before 1917 because he spent the last two years of his life with his son Alexander Smith in New Mexico.
