He had been in ill health for the past five years, and his passing was expected almost momentarily during this time. Though suffering excruciating pain constantly, especially during the last three weeks, Grandpa Smith bore his sufferings with a patience and fortitude that won for him the admiration of all who came in contact with him. He expressed his readiness to meet his creator, and prayed for the end to come, yet he was at all times ready to submit to God's will. Mr. Smith was born in Nodaway County, Missouri, Sept. 11, 1846. In 1870 he was married to Miss Bettie Holmes of Paris, Illinois, to this union were born ten children, two of those, one son and one daughter, having already passed on to their heavenly reward. In 1901 Mr. Smith moved from Missouri to Kansas where he resided until 1912 when he moved to Kingsville, Texas. He lived with his family on a farm which he purchased one mile east of this city until ill health forced him to retire in 1926. At the time of his death he lived in the St. George Apartments. Short funeral services were held at 7:30 P.M. at the Allen Undertaking Parlor, conducted by Dr. Geo. F. Williams of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. A. H. of the Baptist Church. His remains were taken to Eldorado, Kansas for burial, being accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Bellie Hawk. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife and eight children, namely, H.J. Smith of Los Angeles, California, H. P. Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joseph W. Smith of Hutchinson, Kansas, Mrs. W. O. Fryar of Hillsdale, Wyoming, Mrs. R. H. Dirk of Oakland, California, Mrs. Bellie Hawk, Ravenwood, MO, Mrs Edwin Wright of Robstown, Texas and Dorse Smith of Kingville, Texas the last three named were with him at the end. Grandpa' Smith's bright mind, his loyalty to his family and his friends, his upright life and unfailing integrity endeared him to all who knew him, and a host of friend join his family in mourning his departure.
