Booker was born in Oregon County, Missouri in 1843. He was the son of Willis Booker (1785-1865) and Elizabeth Booker (1811-1875). Willis J. grew up on the Booker homestead in Oregon County. At the age of nineteen, he enlisted for the Confederate Army, on March 8, 1862, in Webster County, Missouri. Private Willis J. Booker served in CO I, 4th Mo Infantry. Willis saw action in several major battles, Iuka, Fort Gibson, and Grand Gulf. However, he died during one of the most decisive battles for the Union at Champion Hill, (Baker's Creek), Mississippi, on May 16, 1853. He was buried by the Union troops in a mass grave at Champion Hill Burial Ground, in Champion Hill, Hinds County, Mississippi.
