McCord appointed Commissioner to superintend the digging, walling and curbing of a well to be dug near the Court House, on the north side, to be 9 feet in diameter in the earth, 7 feet in the rock, to not more than 40 feet deep nor less than 30 feet, to be let out to the lowest bidder and to be complete on or before the second Monday of August. The Court empowered the Commissioner with the power to provide suitable conducters from the roof of the Court House so as to furnish the well with water. He received $100 from the Court on this day, and later was granted additional money for the project. S. Kimzey dug the well. This old "well" stands near the center of the present square" in front of the Court House; it has a large circular watering trough for the horses, which brings their owners into town. Selected are the following men to serve as judges in the election Washington Township-Francis Fagans, D.S. Woody and F.A. Meyer Linn Twp.- William Woody, James Robinson,and Charles Seals; Jackson Twp.-Thomas Davis, David Cowain, and John Beck; Crawford Twp. Andrew Branson, Chesley Glover and John. Bacon; Jefferson Twp. Wm. Sutten, Elijah Jones and Asa Pinnell; Benton Twp.- A.C. Dudgeon, West W. Price and John Devore. Road overseers which were appointed by the Court Included; John Bacon, John King, Drewery Holland, Cooper, Thomas Cames, Henry Wolf Bernard Westerman, Joseph Tweehouse, Ephraim Briggs,'Amelien Crutsinger, George E.Bishop, Wm. Wolf: and John Calvin Briant. Townships are being organized for the establishment of public schools. The residents of Township 4 &, Range 10, to meet at the home of Jacob Teague; the Court appointed John H. Beck to serve as Commissioner with James Tyee_and Jacoab Teague, directors. Township 43, Range 7 John Giles appointed Commissioner, to serve with Hiland Giles, to serve with Hiland Giles. And Thos P Holling, directors and residents met at the house of John Wilson for an organizational meeting. J B Canady was school Commissioner, for Townships 45, Range 9, John Carey was school Commissioner for Townships 43, Range 8 includes Linn and surrounding areas. 1852 Schools had been organized in some parts of the county. Schools in Township 40, Range 7 (Maries County) Township 41, Range 7; Township 42, & Ranges 7 and 11; Township 43, Ranges 7,8,9,10 Township 44, Ranges 7,9, 'and. 10, and Township 45, and Ranges 7 and.8. Zachariah Isbell appointed County Assessor on May 10, 1852, John Graftath, William Minix (Muenks) and Gerhard Minix (Muenks), ordered to review a change in the state road near the French Church, (Catholic). December 1852, Henry Hasler, appointed as Road overseer from Lisle Town to the French Church, to replace Henry Dohmann, John C. Ferguson appointed overseer of the road from the French Church. on the State Road to Linn., H. W. Neill authorized to practice law at this bar. He received $20 for his services as County Attorney. An enumeration of school children between the ages of 5 and, 20 was taken by the following men; Crawford Twp.-P. B. McCord Washington Twp; Augustus Koch; Jackson--J. Beck; Benton-John Harris; Jefferson- A.S. Rogers; Linn-Robert Moore. The Court ordered S.N. Rorer appointed overseer on a road from Creed Burnett's Mill to Fisher's Landing on the Missouri River and Fisher allowed to erect gates on the road. S. Kinzey paid $6 for services rendered by him as County Clerk for one-fourth of the year. Elijah Davis, deceased, heir Caroline Davis, wife of Thomas Cordery. On Feb. 14, 1853, the County Court met. Present were A.S. Rogers, Carnm Seay and J Harris, Justices; Eli McJilton, Clerk; and C. Evans, Sheriff. James Robinson received $40 for services as Commissioner of Linn, up to this date Feb. 16, 1853. The Clerk was ordered to certify to the Secretary of State that J. C. Evans,. Sheriff: will take the census for Osage County for the year 1852. For taking the 1852 census Mr. Evans will receive $75--he has worked at least 50 days at $1.50 per day Henry Woody, County Treasurer, will received $90 for his services during the year of 1852. Adison Miller was allowed $11.25 for holding an inquestover Prudence Williams. Theador Strump was allowed $3 for making a coffin for Eliza Alcock, and the Court allowed Louis Beetine $2 for a shroud for Mrs. Alcock. The Court permitts James McCarnment to rent or lease the mill belonging to the estate of Joseph Prior, deceased, for any term not exceeding three years, at his option., Mrs. Harriet Oliver received, $6.55 for keeping Martha Jane Messick. John C. Scott became road overseer on a road from Linn to Hermann, replacing.. Drury Hold. Chesley Glover replaced William McQueen as road overseer. Other road overseer's appointed included Joseph Carnes, William Johnson, John C. Johnson, D.M. Goodman, Charles Burtnett, A.C.Dudgeon, Johnson Mahori, Alfred Hicks, D Shackleford, Henry Hood, Thomas Goodman, Hugh Benson, Martin Ridenhour, Jno. C. The Court ordered Lot No. 17 in the town of Linn to be donated for school purposes, and lot No. 20, which had previously been designated as a school lot on the plat, ordered relinquished to the county in, lieu of Lot 17. C. H. Gregory received a permit to take out a license as a dram shop keeper in the town of Linn; the law requires that he file a bond for $500, and the court approved his bond. John Carey has been granted a permit to take out tavern license, and posted a $500 bond. Grocers' bonds approved and filed for Hardy Keeney to keep a grocery in Linn and N.H. Cansler, to keep a grocery near Jess Boon's. Peddlers will pay for licenses including the clock peddler. Camron Seay received $3.00 for services as surveyor. M. W. Severe received $140.32 for the County's one-half of the expense of assessing the county for 1853 (the state has paid the other one-half of the cost). The court has ordered R.C. Thurman, Thomas Baccus, James Breeding, and John Chrisman to "cut out, open, and make" a designated road in the county. I Berry, A.N. Williams, and A. Dudgeon, appointed to review and mark a road commencing at Creed Burnett's Mill and extending to Pryor's Mill on the Gasconade River. William Strumpf, appointed road over seer on the new road near Strumphfs mill., Eli McJinton resigned as County Clerk, to become Effective, Aug. 15, 1853. William M. Lankin, appointed to fill the vacancy. A.S. Rogers presented a petition, to move a certain part of a road which runs near his house, so he can cultivate his fields. The court appointed Commissioners Samuel H. Hawkins, Reuben J. Ridenhour, and Martin Ridenhour to mark out another road, which would not prevent the cultivation of Roger's fields. P.B. McCord is appointed Commissioner to contract for the building of a House on land recently purchased by the County: for the use of the poor, that the house should be a frame house 16 feet by 24 feet, and 12 feet high, in the' square." This will be the county's poor house. P.B. McCord was paid $1 for making a plat of the town Of Linn. Camm Seay is allowed' $150 to purchase a map of Osage County. P.B. McCord, issued a warrant to enable him to pay H. Keeney for completing the digging of a well in Linn. Dr. Bruns, issued a ferry license in, August of . 1853. William Bolton, granted a ferry license on the Osage River, tax free, with the usual rates of, ferrage, School district, in Twp. 42, Range 8, John 1. McDaniel, president of the Board of Directors; Indian Creek School, in Twp. 43, Range, 9, with Camm Seay, President of the Board of Trustees; 3rd District in Twp" 43, Range 9, with William Woody, president of the Board; No.1 in Twp. 44, Range 9, Fountain Robinson, President of the board; Loose Creek District in Twp. 43, Ranges., with Benjamin Sutton, President of the Board. John Carey received school money for Twp. 43, Range 8, and 1. B. Kennedy received school money for Twp. 43, Range 9. Other schools also received funds but no names were given. John 0 Bacon paid $4.50 for boxing trees and putting glass in windows of the Court House. Solomon Kinzey received $34 dollars for serving as County Attorney, for managing 10 or 12 paupers, for collecting monies, and for supervising the repair of the road near the Bluff at Lisle Town. Jesse Lambeth, paid for keeping and maintaining Ann Carwell, a pauper. William Brokerhoff, paid for keeping John Schultes, aged about 21, German" Pauper, insane for two years; he has been committed to the Lunatic Asylum" in Fulton. John O. Bacon received $5 for making a coffm for a pauper. The school enumeration of 1853 is to be taken by Elijah Jones, Jefferson Township; C. Glover, Crawford; John Walker, Benton;' C.P. Davis, Linn; Robert Rowden, Jackson; and R.F. Tiller, Washington Twp. The court ordered a warrant written on the County rreasury for $20 to be spent in procuring a wooden leg for Jno. Kern, or for the support of his family, with Mr. Kern making his choice. A young Negro boy is to be sold on the first Monday of January, 1854, at the Court House door, for cash in hand, this at the request of J.M. Townley, a legatee of the estate of Rudolph Alkire, deceased, for the purpose of a partition of property.
