When Polk Hall bought the Baker land in 1900, there were several graves on the land and Hall deeded two acres for cemetery purposes. But the deed was lost when the courthouse in Gainesville burned, Paul Wade, who has compiled a record of cemetery inscriptions, said. In 1959, Roy Lester and Johnnie Lester redeeded the cemetery along with strips of land on each end doubling the size. The deed was made to Paul Wade, Willard Atkinson, Roy Pendergrass, Silas Cropper and A. H. Pendergrass, trustees of the Bakersfield Cemetery and their successors in office. Last year, in November, a cemetery association was formed to provide for the maintenance and perpetual care of the grounds through the establishment of a general fund. Members of the association are Willard Atkinson, H. D. Rosco Pendergrass and Paul Wade. Laying the groundwork for the establishment of perpetual care, Paul Wade, Guy Johnston and Penny Fore surveyed the cemetery and Roscoe Pendergrass set ground posts at surveyed sections. Wade prepared section plots, which he bound in wooden covers and Charlie Myers made a map to scale of the cemetery on a window blind which can be unrolled for checking. Roy Lester donated additional land last year for cemetery use and Bales Sawmill donated lumber for rest rooms. It is now possible to purchase reserved plots for $10 each with a limit of two plots to a family, Wade said. The purchase money will go into the perpetual care fund. Here are the inscriptions from the headstones in Bakersfield Cemetery compiled by Paul Wade: Atkinson, Audie, 1888-1964 Atkinson, B. Cunningham, two Daughters Crawford, H. G., March 28, 1902-July 11, 1974 PART II Paul Wade, who has compiled headstone inscriptions from the 102-year-old Bakersfield Cemetery, identified the road that runs along the edge of the cemetery as the historic old Mountain Home to West Plains mail and freight route. After traveling a dry stretch of road from Mountain Home, freighters looked forward to this stretch of the road because it followed along Bennett's Bayou to its headwaters near the old Amy post office. Water for horses and mules was readily available and shade was plentiful, Wade said. The road passed the old John Vaughan water mill, near the Ozark-Howell county line, where wheat and corn were ground on stone buhrs. Along the route was a little post office known as Bly and the "pigeon roost woods."" In this woods, covering about 40 acres, thousands of pigeons once roosted, bending saplings so that when they grew to big trees they stayed permanently bent, Wade said. The pigeons were killed by the sackful by just knocking them from the trees, Wade said. He was told about the pigeon woods, which later belonged to Oscar Lair, by "old-timers" when he was a youth, he said. A tornado later took out the big trees in the pigeon woods. Wade's father, George H. Wade, is buried in the Bakersfield Cemetery. His mother, Mary Gibson Wade, died before the family moved to Ozark county. The Wakes had lived in Massachusetts, Texas, Utah, Colorado and Florida before coming to Bakersfield. Wade recalls that he was a teenager when his father and his brother traversed Florida for 16 days in a covered wagon pulled by mules to Jacksonville. There they boarded a train for West Plains and the mules were shipped by box car. When the Wades got to West Plains, they found the mules "poor" and in need of water and food, but "I've never seen a dead mule," Wade said, "and they soon were back to normal." At West Plains, the elder Wade asked where there was good farming land to be bought and he was directed to Bakersfield. On Nov. 13, 181, Paul Wade and Ellen Joice, the daughter of Miles and Mary Vaughan Joice, of the Hocomo community, were married in the home of friends, which is now their home. They are the parents of five children, four of whom are living. They are Mrs. Alice Brooks and Ralph Wade of Homestead, Fla., and Raymond Wade and Mrs. Lola Cotter of Viola, Ark. One daughter, Mrs. Elsie Martin, is dead. They have ten grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. The first settlers caom to the area before the Civil War, but a post office was not established until 1873. Postal records show the office was first called Bakersville, then Waterville (1877) and finally Bakersfield became the accepted name in 1885.
