Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Charity Cemetery T21, R14, S20 Route W to 261, left two miles Charity Cemetery takes its name from the former Charity school district and lies on land deeded for school purposes by S. E. and Ida Hillhouse and S. W. and Sarah Smith in 1915. The district was consolidated with Gainesville in 1954-55. Years before the school district ws formed there had been a burial ground here. There are two graves in the cemetery which are outlined with rock fences. Albert Hillhouse, son of S. E. and Ida Hillhouse, explained that this was a method of protecting burials when only shallow graves could be dug because of many rock ledges under shallow soil cover. There are many unmarked graves, and sixteen are marked with fieldstones. In addition to two graves with rock fences, there are two stones, one with initials A. A. M. and date 1900 and the other with the initials H. M. and date 1902. Information the full names for these burials has not been available.
