In the early 1830's the family emigrated to the area from Tennessee and founded a community known as Grabeel. Parson Grabeel built a chutch and laid out a town, but it never developed. Richard Hawkins now owns the old Grabeel property. Franklin Grove Cemetery, located in the old Grabeel community about 10 miles north of Gainesville, lies on land donated by Franklin Hesterlee. A shady and peaceful little cemetery, it is named for Hesterlee and the cedar trees lowering over the grounds. The first person to be buried there was Geouge W. Elliott, in May 1885. At that time Franklin Grove school was located at the edge of the cemetery. It burned in 1897. For many years, decoration services were held at the cemetery on the first Sunday in June but as the original settlers moved away, the services were discontinued and the cemetery grew up with weeds and brambles. Then in recent years a cemetery committee was formed and the little burial ground has been cleaned up and is kept in good condition. The present members of the committee, Merle Hesterlee, Hershel Pippin and Alton Thomas, are planning for a new fence and road repairs. There are 122 graves in the cemetery with 45 of them without headstones. Among unmarked burials are the graves of: Amos Beasley, "Uncle" Billy Beasley, Charley Beasley, Lizzie Beasley Grisham, Will Beasley, John Brown Baby, Sally Clark, George Cowan Babies (2), Crete Howard, and Wilson Baby. Graves with inscriptions on them are: Arp, J.
