Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Inscriptions Compiled from 62 Grave Markers In Hart Cemetery Near Dugginsville By Beulah Friend Satterfield Hart Cemetery lies just off of Route P, about one-half mile from Dugginsville on land homesteaded by George M. D. Hart and his wife, Emily Friend Hart, in 1864. The first burial on the land set aside for a cemetery was of Andie Friend in 1870. He was the father of Emily Friend Hart and his tombstone bears this inscription: Capt. Andie Friend, a noble-man in the Black Hawk War. Andie Friend's grave was located north and south and a number of subsequent graves were placed in this same direction. Then gradually, one-by-one, they were turned at an angle until now they face the traditional way, east and west. Sixty-three graves are marked with tombstones or burial identifications. There are 169 graves at which rubble stones have been placed as markers. In addition, there are unmarked graves, but the exact number is not known. The names of burials at which unmarked stones have been placed are not recorded. Ida Hart and the late Sterlin Hart deeded land to the cemetery a number of years ago and people who have family members buried in the cemetery have contributed to the upkeep of the grounds with donations, made generally on Decoration Day. Last May a drive to establish a perpetual care fund was initiated. Now money not needed for immediate care is being deposited in a trust fund so that later interest from the fund may be used to pay upkeep costs. Persons wishing to contribute to the trust fund may send donations to any member of the Hart Cemetery Fund Committee: Erma Lee Luna, Gainesville, Sie Long, Gainesville, or Mae Long, Theodosia.
