Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Isabella Cemetery Inscriptions Compiled By D. W. (Doc) Johnson, Polly and Emmet Koch and Stella Luna PART I Isabella Cemetery, known to have been used as a burial ground since the mid-1860's, is located along U.S. 160, just west of the Isabella store and post office. Here the first burial was made just after the close of the Civil War when a woman died in a camp set up near the area by a group of settlers moving west. Mrs. Blanche Honeycutt, the Idumea correspondent for the Ozark County Times, said that she remembers hearing stories bout the woman, who was buried on land set aside for a cemetery by her great grandparents, John B. and Malinda Herd. "The slab of stone placed over her grave is still there and persons often wonder about it. "The story about the woman was told to Aunt Bertha Smith by Aunt Sara Meek. Aunt Sara helped lay out the woman for burial," Mrs. Honeycutt said. Another burial of interest at Isabella is that of John Hutchison, Missouri's last Civil War veteran to die. He moved to Ozark county with his parents at an early age and when 18 enlisted with the 46th Missouri Infantry and fought on the Union side until he was discharged in 1865 and returned to Ozark county. When he died at 105 at the home of a daughter in Bristow, Okla., he was survived by seven children, 94 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren, 27 great, great grandchildren and several great, great, great grandchildren. The land set aside for the cemetery was deeded to the trustees of the Isabella Cemetery by Delmar and Neva Herd on Oct. 3, 1969. Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Herd lived on the farm homesteaded by his grandparents and which he inherited from his parents John (Babe) and Josie Herd. The farm is located near old Locust post office. Mrs. Honeycutt said that she "remembers when the cemetery was quite a brushy place, in the days when there were no lawn mowers. "Back in WPA days during the 1930's a project was set up to clean some of the cemeteries and the cemetery was cleaned of brush and grass was planted. A cemetery committee was appointed to see to the upkeep of the cemetery and it has been well cared for ever since. The cemetery is kept moved and cared for through donations by relatives and friends of people buried there. The members of the committee are J. A. Kyle, Roy Smith and Everett Chisam. The Isabella settlement dates from the mid-1850's and the first post office was established there in 1856 by Henry A. Brattin, who named it for his daughter. In the 1880's the community had several stores, two hotels and a college. But a fire destroyed several stores in the 1890's, halting growth. Besides Mrs. Honeycutt, Mrs. J. A. Kyle, Isabella postmaster, and Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Herd have supplied information on the early history of Isabella Cemetery. Last August, D. W. (Doc) Johnson, Polly and Emmet Koch and Stella Luna compiled these inscriptions from the headstones in the cemetery: Baker, John Edmond, Feb.17, 1918-Feb. 26, 1918 Baker, Mable, Sept. 26, 1900-Feb. 17, 1973 Baker, Samuel Herman, Jan. 20, 1897-Feb. 29, 1972 Barnett, James, Nov. 7, 1877-Apr. 7, 1931 Barnett, Naoma, Mar. 20, 1874-May 20, 1934 Bouslog, Bryant M., 1897-1969 Breeding, Calvin, Nov. 28, 1864-July 18, 1941 Breeding, Cora, Jan. 30, 1866-May 28, 1945 Breeding, Oliver J., Mar. 15, 1884-June 9, 1951 Brown, Carl P., died Jan. 27, 1970, age 29 years, five months and 17 days Brown, William W., Missouri Pvt.
