Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Lilly Ridge Cemetery Headstone Information Compiled by Cemetery Committee Members Mrs. Earlene Hicks and Mrs. Juanita Gaddy have made a compilation of headstone information in the Lilly Ridge Cemetery at the east edge of Gainesville. A new archway has been erected at the cemetery, a project of the Lilly Ridge Extension Club and the cemetery committee which includes, besides Mrs. Hicks and Mrs. Gaddy, Mrs. Linnie Pitcock and Mrs. Edna Blacksher. The arch, designed by Karl Schmit of Althea Springs, was make by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert McGinnis at their Repair Ship here. Land for the cemetery and a school also used as a church house is said to have been deeded by a Mr. Lilly whose first name is not known. The schoolhouse, no longer standing, was built about 1879 by James Terry and a Mr. Coady, Mrs. Blacksher recalls. The Jim Terry's daughter, Mary, was the first burial in the cemetery which once adjoined the schoolhouse. She was 9 years old and is said to have requested before her death that she be buried near the school she loved. The second burial was that of Grover, the Terry's son, who died at 18 of typhoid fever. In later years, Loyd and Edith Adamson deeded land to enlarge the cemetery and for the nearby Baptist Church. The present building was completed in 1951.
