Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Lutie Cemetery at Theodosia Headstone Information Compiled For 105-year-old Lutie Cemetery at Theodosia PART I A compilation of headstone information from the 105-year-old Lutie Cemetery at Theodosia has recently been made by Mrs. Dortha Ledbetter, Mrs. Rainey Webster and Mrs. Brooksie McGinnis. Mrs. Webster and Mrs. McGinnis are great granddaughters of James and Mary Jane Friend who set off the land, once part of their farm, as burial ground in 1867. The first person to be buried there was Ed Milit whose death brought about the deeding of the land as a community cemetery. The second burial was a Negro, identified only as Hall, and, also in 1867, James buried his wife, Mary Jane, there. He was buried beside her in 1883. Their graves, near a large dogwood tree, are marked by a stone which notes that they gave the land for the cemeteryl They came to the area before the Civil War from Marion county, Arkansas and homesteaded a farm, part of which is now known as the Dosia Jones place. Their log home once stood by the Jones Spring. Several years ago, Ben Jones, Mart Jones, Palmer Willhoit and Bill Goff deeded additional land to the cemetery. The deeding of more land has been promised by Theodosia Hills, Inc., Mrs. McGinnis said. There are more than 400 graves in the cemetery which now lies along Highway 160 between the Theodosia United Methodist Church and the True Hope General Baptist Church, which is available for funerals for persons of any denomination, Mrs. McGinnis, said. Among the graves at the cemetery, there are 18 or more unknown. The inscriptions on the others are given alphabetically: Algozzini, Janette, June 25, 1961-Nov. 22, 1966 Baker, Everett, Aug. 23, 1902-Oct. 12, 1953 Brown, Berryman, Dec. 25, 1824-May 21, 1907 Brown, Cora Alice, Nov. 15, 1901-Sept. 18, 1961 Brown, Earl, Aug. 7, 1909-Jan. 27, 1744 Brown, Ida, April 16, 1904-Nov. 4, 1905 Brown, Infant, March 29, 1896 Brown, Jess, May 28, 1880-April 25, 1959 Brown, Nora, Feb. 1, 1884-June 18, 1949 Brown, Ross, Oct. 18, 1898-Feb. 9, 1899 Brickey, Joan, May 30, 1842-Feb. 24, 1889 Burnett, Bert, Jan. 13, 1883-July 13, 1962 Burnett, Deana Lynn, June 5, 1963-June 8, 1963 Burnett, Dolin, Oct. 4, 1924-April 8, 1927 Burnett, Infant of Bert and Rutha Burnett, April 16, 1909 Burnett, Rutha, Oct. 12, 1881-May 17, 1907 (mother of infant above? The settlement was named Lutie in 1893 by first portmaster, Lucius P. Vernon. Vernon named his post office for his young son. Lutie remained the name of the post office until 1960, when by popular request it was changed to Theodosia. The old Theodosia post office, founded in 1886 had been abandoned in the rising waters of Bull Shoals Lake in 1951. The name given this post office by first postmaster Tully D. Kirby for his daughter was transferred to the government dock on the lake. As the recreation industry grew in the area, so did recognition of the name Theodosia, until citizens of the area decided to change the name of their post office from Lutie to Theodosia. Now the old Lutie settlement is recalled by the name of the cemetery and the school district serving the area.
