The cemetery lies on land homesteaded by James Pinkney and Elizabeth Burden Martin in the early 1850's. Used as a burial ground as early as 1854, the cemetery is located near the Bryant, about seven miles north of Dora. James and Elizabeth Martin had 12 children and it was one of their daughters, Terrissa, who was the first to be buried on the homestead. A plain stone, with no inscription, marks her grave. Six other of their children are buried in the cemetery along with the mother. The father was killed in 1864, near the end of the Civil War, by bushwackers. The deed was committed near the bayou at Bakersfield and he is buried near there. The James Martins' son, Patrick, and his wife, Martha Matney Martin, were the first to dedicate the burial ground as a cemetery. They are said to have deeded one half acre for this purpose, but the date is not known as, apparently, the deed was not registered. After Patrick Martin's death, in 1925, his son, Alton Martin, and his wife, Ella Routh Martin, deeded another half-acre of ground for cemetery purposes. The cemetery served as a burial ground for several other families, besides the Martins. Burials made from the Sycamore community, across the Bryant sometimes involved using a boat to transport the corpse, especially in times of high water. This was true of one burial in June, 1871, when J. H. Bushong was buried there. The Bryant was out of its banks and it took three boats to guide the one carrying his body across the riffles to the cemetery, recalls Tan Martin. Reached by a long drive through a wooded country lane, the cemetery is fenced and is exceptionally well cared for. This summer a drive was initiated to purchase a $1,000 savings bond to set up a perpetual care fund for the cemetery. At the annual family reunion, $500 was collected toward the bond purchase. Cleon Martin and Delbert Luna head the perpetual fund committee and they say anyone wishing to contribute to the fund may do so by sending their donation to the Bank of Gainesville make out to the Martin Cemetery Savings Fund.
