Mrs. Hambelton says that in compiling the list this May, she found a number of headstones which did not have any dates on them and that it was almost impossible to make out the names on others. Johnny Beard, another member of the committee, estimates that there are some 10 to 15 graves that are now completely unmarked, but may at one time have had hand cut stones or have been marked with a pile of stones. Sallee Cemetery lies on a south facing hill above Little Pine Creek some 6 miles east of Gainesville. The road leading to the cemetery joins 160 highway on the left at Farmers Store. The land was set aside for a cemetery by Harvey Sallee who once owned the farm there now owned by W. R. White. Mr. White says that at the time Mr. Sallee thought that he owned all of the land, on which the cemetery lay, but that when the line was run, it was found that Uncle Dock Basford also owned some of the land and so Mr. Basford, too, donated land for the cemetery. Mr. White's sister, Mrs. Bessie Hambelton, now ownes the land that Mr. Basford had. Harvey Sallee was not related to the Sallee families now living in Ozark county and his name was pronounced at though it were spelled "Sally." He also donated land for the school there and the school district was organized on April 17, 1897, Mr. White said. The first board members were John Hogard, Harvey Sallee, J. W. Baker, Earl W. Ebrite and Robert Hogard. The Sallee school building was erected about 200 yards from the cemetery and Mr. White, who attended two years there, remembers the cemetery and says that no one seemed to take care of it. The school was also used as a church and Mr. White says that large crowds attended meetings there. After reorganization, the school building was torn down. Mr. Beard says that some of the earliest graves are unmarked but that it is believed that some of the members of the Summers family are buried in them and maybe some of the early settlers who were members of the McCool family are also in the unmarked graves. Several of the McCool family graves are marked and one, Franklin McCool, was a Civil War Veteran, though his stone gives no dates. Mr. Bears says that until about 20 years ago, the cemetery was a wilderness and so overgrown with weeds that it was impossible to tell there was even a cemetery there. Then an interest developed in keeping the grounds and graves in good shape and the ground was fenced to keep livestock out and the underbrush cleared away. Now the grounds are mowed and kept in good shape by volunteer workers and with the help of donations from families who have loved ones buried there. "It's possible for the committee to keep the grounds looking good," Mr. Beard said.
