Inscriptions, Burial Data Compiled On 517 Graves in Thornfield Cemetery PART I Compiled by Jean Loftis Land was dedicated at Thornfield for a cemetery in 1912 by George W. Pearcy, the f ounder of Thornfield, and his wife, Josephine M. Pearcy. Lying along the slope of a hill, the headsomely cared for grounds now consist of some three acres. The original plot given by the Pearcys included one and a half acres. It is in this part of the cemetery where Pearacy was buried in 1915 and his wife in 1934. In 1878, Pearcy had succeeded William J. Piland as postmaster at Piland's Store, which had been established in 1870. The same year as he became postmaster, Pearcy chanaged the name to Thornfield. Pearcy was active in the business and educational development of the settlement which he platted as a town. Thornfield post office now serves a village business community, an elementary school and a farming area with related agri-businesses. No charge is made for burials in Thornfield Cemetery nor for use of the funeral chapel. The care of the grounds and chapel is paid for from donations from persons who have family members buried there. There is one rule regarding burials and that is that lots cannot be reserved for any family member, except for a spouse of an individual who has been buried in the cemetery. The Thornfield Cemetery Fundral Chapel was constructed with donations from aproximately 200 persons. One of the donors, Nellie B. Hobbs, also donated the chainlink fence erected around the perimeter of the cemetery. The fence is dedicated to the memory of her husband, W. K. Hobbs, and daughter, Vada Mae Hobbs. The members of the cemetery committee are Marvin Murray, Basil Haskins and Archie Wallace. Present burials in the cemetery number 517. Only 13 of these graves are of persons unknown. After the cemetery was dedicated, three cemeteries in the area were relocated at the Thornfield Cemetery. The original ground, about 1 ½ acres, was pruchased from W. C. Pearcy, the founder of Thornfield, and his wife, Josephine. The purchase price was raised by donation, the first being $5 from David C. Dean, who later the same year (1912) became the first person to be buried in the new cemetery. There are stones in the cemetery with earlier death dates than 1912, but these mark the graves of burials moved to Thornfield from other cemeteries. One was the Lawson Cemetery, while some other reburials were from small family plots or other small cemeteries. The original cemetery later was enlarged through the purchase of about 1 ½ acres from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Baker. The Baker family has reserved land for family graves sites but, except for this, the cemetery is open for free burial to anyone who wishes to inter a family member there. A space next to a burial may be reserved for a spouse, but no other sites may be reserved. The cemetery is kept in fine condition through donations which are collected at the cemetery on Sunday before Decoration Day by members of the cemetery committee. The members are Basil Haskins, Marvin Murray and Archie Wallace. Basil Simpson is the caretaker. There are three distinctive (tall, cylindrical, side by side) memorials which mark the graves of two brothers and their father. The brothers died within two days of each other of influenza while in army camp during WWI. When the father died, family members had the style of the markers at his sons' graves copied for his grave. The wife and mother are not buried in this cemetery. The marker on the right is on the grave of Frank Riggs, Nov. 7, 1892- Dec. 10, 1918. The inscription reads, "He did not want to leave us, but he went to risk his life. He was a fine American and upholds the Stars and Stripes." The center marker is at the grave of Claude Riggs, July 25, 1894-Dec 8, 1918. The inscription on this stone reads, "To leave us, Dear, was hard. The hardest thing of all. But you were no slacker when you heard your country's call." The inscription on the father's (John C. Riggs) stone is simply his dates, Aug. 30, 1838-March 21, 1925. Here is the remainder of the listing of information on headstones in the cemetery: Lambeth, Frank H., 1869-1954 Lambeth, Nora, 1881-1963 Langston, CAS., 1889-1963 Lane, Hazel Haskins, 1915-1973 Lang, Emma, 1870-1950 Laurence, John, 1877-1954 Lawrence, Ran, 1904-1952 Lawson, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Lawson, 1937 Lawson, infant of Mr. and Mrs. Sneed Lawson Lawson, Amos, 1889-1975 Lawson, Angeline, 1871-1949 Lawson, Carl E., 1931-1973 Lawson, Cornelia, 1863-1924 Lawson, Eula T., 1912-1977 Lawson, Evertt, 1902-1911 Lawson, Janet Lee, 1955 Lawson, Joe, 1873-1945 Lawson, John, 1856 Lawson, Lena, 1921-1938 Lawson, Lowell F., 1911-1978 Lawson, Martha, 1895-1925 Lawson, Maatilda, 1856 Lawson, Milum L, 1884-1950 Lawson, Nancy, 1863-1949 Lawson, Nona, 1905-1973 Lawson, Opie, 1911-1912 Lawson, Ora, 1894-1961 Lawson, P.
