Gen. & Historical Society ==================================================================== Udall/Price/Mitchell Cemetery T22, R12, S35 Route O, two miles east of Udall boat dock Udall Cemetery takes its name from Ozark County's second oldest post office, opened in 1848 and first called St. Ledger. The relocated Price and Mitchell family cemeteries were moved to this place in 1943 by the U. S. Corps of Engineers from sections twenty-one and twenty-two in adjacent township twenty-one. The cemeteries were moved to save them from inundation by impoundment of Lake Norfork. The relocation site was chosen, with U. S. Corps of Engineers' approval, by trustees from all cemeteries involved, and a Price Cemetery Association made up of Oscar Comer, Jerome Wells, Charles Halford, Harve Hathcock, and Harris Mitchell purchased from W. L. Sappington two acres at the site chosen. Later, in 1958, the Bakersfield school district sold the association a parcel in excess of one acre. The Corps of Engineers opened the graves at Price and Mitchell Cemeteries and placed the remains in new wooden boxes and transported the boxes to the new location for re-interment. Attached to the boxes were numbered metal tags, which identified the remains by name (or as unknown) and by grave numbers. The Corps of Engineers reported the cost of the project at $5,264.90. There were 209 graves opened at Price Cemetery, three burials were claimed by relatives, and all others removed to Udall. Four infant remains were enclosed in one box and four in another, at the request of relatives. There were 65 remains of unknown persons from Price Cemetery moved to the new location. Four of these unknowns were said to be black persons. From Mitchell Cemetery, a smaller burial ground, there were 36 reburials. This included 19 unknowns. (The following seems to be a summary of which burials are from each cemetery. The dates, if any, are included in the main listing which follows.) The stones in place at Price and Mitchell, when these cemeteries were relocated, were moved to the new location. Where no stones were in place but the name of the interred was known, the Corps of Engineers placed a wooden marker at the relocated graves giving name and grave number. At the graves of the unknowns, grave numbers were placed on the markers. Dollie Davis, postmaster at Udall, said when the wooden signs fell away at the unknowns, she replaced them with concrete blocks with the proper grave numbers. Land for Udall Cemetery was set aside by John and Mary Bunn on their homestead, and the earliest inscribed stone in this part of the cemetery marks the grave of their daughter, Harriet, 1887. There are earlier dated stones among the Price and Mitchell reburials. BAILEY, W.
