PEMISCOT COUNTY MISSOURI, MARRIAGE RECORDS, Forward 1-26-1898-9-20-1912 Volume 1 Transcribed and Compiled by Linda L. Green September 2000 FOREWARD In transcribing and compiling the marriage records of this county, I found that there were two females authorized to solemnize marriages. These ladies were Jane Lucas and Mrs. Minnie M. Treece. I was not able to determine if they were ministers of the gospel or justices of the peace as no indication was shown. Records of the brides and grooms are indexed together by last name, but not the name of the person who solemnized the marriages. Approximately 99% of the records were legible. One percent was difficult because the writing was very large and curly overlapping other writing. In a few instances, J. W. Green, Recorder of Deeds, shows up as a Justice of the Peace (JP), Minister of the Gospel (MG) and Judge of Probate. I have shown this with the following symbol (?). If an individual was underage, they had to have someone’s permission to get married. I’ve shown who consented to the marriage under the names of the bride or groom. Earlier years do not for the most part have two dates shown. Then I realized some dates were badly out of sequence and started recording the date marriage was actually recorded. That date might be required to find the record if a copy of the record was requested. Counties or states below names indicate county or state where an individual was from. Where no county shown, individuals were from Pemiscot County Missouri. There were a few instances where the solemnized date is after the date recorded. I’ve also shown this with the following symbol (?). This is an indication that sometimes the records were filled out in advance. Although J. W. Green was Recorder of Deeds, obviously someone in that office was recording marriage records. The signature for J. W. Green remained mostly constant, (not that he actually signed every record), but other handwriting varied and so did the spelling of the names of those who solemnized marriages. In some instances, a first name was not entirely legible. I used an underscore followed by a period to indicate this __. I would make an attempt to identify a name which might have more than one spelling. For example, Jake (John). This means the name could be Jake or it might be John. Abbreviations used included JP for Justice of the Peace, MG for Minister of the Gospel, and PC (which I as never able to figure out). If PC was for Priest Catholic earlier entries showed the name of the church. When the use of PC started there was no indication of a church name. So I’m not really sure what PC stood for. Linda L.
