John and Sophia were German Immigrants who settled in southwestern Phelps Co. about 1860, after spending some time in Illinois. It is believed that they came from the part of Germany known as Prussia and that they were, by religion, Lutherans. John dug his grave one day and shot himself falling into the grave. He had told neighbors prior to this that if they heard the shot to please come bury him. His wife hanged herself a year later.
