Phelps County, Missouri Obituaries - Elizah Fann 1910: Elizah died (obituary) Vol XV, #7, St James Journal, St James, Phelps Co, MO September 9, 1910: MARIES'S COUNTY'S OLDEST CITIZEN DEAD: The subject of this sketch, Elizah Fann, one of the oldest citizens of Maries County departed this life September 2, 1910 after an illness of nineteen (19) days aged 90 years, 5 months and 6 days. The de- ceased was born in Green County, Tennessee and came with his parents to Maries County, Missouri at the age of fifteen (15) years, settling on the farm north of Safe where he died. He was married to Miss Katherine Parks July 15, 1852. To this union 8 children were born- four boys and four girls. Three boys and 3 girls died in infancy. The oldest and youngest children are left to mourn his departure. Mrs. W. L. Craig of St. James and A.R. Fann who lived with his father. Uncle Elizah professed faith in Christ and united with the M.E. Church at the age of 16 and was ever faithful to his church and his God. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and was firm in what he believed was right. In his last moments, he clasped his hands and praised God. His daughter asked him if he wanted to go and if he was going to heaven. He was unable to speak, but nodded his head, while a bright smile spread over his face. Besides his two children, he leaves 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Offhalter of near High Gate Saturday afternoon, interment being in the Rock Springs Cemetery by the side of his wife and children. "We stood beside his bed of death, bowed down were we in sorrow, We knew he would be lost to us Upon the coming morrow. "From his lips, the cheerful smile could not by death be driven, and with a hope of future bliss, He passed from earth to heaven. M.E. Oe-----n (blot on paper-could not read) Note: There are no Markers at Rock Springs Cemetery for any Fanns- plenty of field stones, but no markers to indicate where the Fanns are buried.
