(Pittsburgh, Pa.) 1860-1898: June 10, 1863 Died on the 28th of April last, of chronic diarrhea, in the hospital at St. Louis, Mo., Sergeant Samuel Newton Powelson, in the 25th year of his age. The deceased was Orderly Sergeant of Co. D, 32d Reg't Missouri Vols. He was in the army near Vicksburg, and, by reason of the sickness of the higher officers, had the command of the Company for a considerable time… Samuel, when quite young, connected himself with the Presbyterian church of Cross Creek, Pa., and held fast the profession of his faith without wavering, to the end. His worthy father, who resides near Rolla in Mo., has lost all his property and is bereaved of two sons by this wicked rebellion, and still lives to pray for the safety of two other sons who are fighting for their country in the armies of the Potomac.
