Peter was a native of Germany, having immigrated to America in 1854. Peter was captured at Shiloh while fighting with the remnants of his company in the Hornet's Nest. He was sent with the other prisoners first to Corinth, MS, then to Memphis, TN, then down to Mobile, AL for a time, next shortly to a prison at Montgomery, AL, then to Chattanooga, TN for exchange however the exchange was cancelled at the last moment. He was then sent to the prison camp at Macon, GA and stayed there until permanently exchanged. While in prison at Macon, the makeshift barracks collapsed upon him, reigning 5 prisoners as well as building timbers on top of him. This caused massive bruising all over his body, an injured arm, leg, and stomach, as well as a severely fractured skull. He was sent by rail to Aiken's Landing, VA on the James River where he was finally exchanged. From there he spent time in hospitals at Fortress Monroe, VA, Newport, RI, and for the longest term at Benton Barracks, MO. During this time, he was under constant medical attention for his injuries. Peter rejoined his company at Decatur, AL in December 1863. Later in 1863, on the march through GA, his injuries became so severe that he was forced by orders of his company captain to march in formation, and then switch to riding in an ambulance at intervals. In December 22nd, 1864 he was honorably discharged at camp near Savannah, GA. Additional Comments: Peter Schaback is buried next to his wife in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Weston, Platte, MO.
