Brooks, 93, died Monday morning April 14, 1980 in Spelman Memorial Hospital, Smithville, Mo. She was born near Girard, Kansas, January 3, 1887 and had lived in Weston for the past 52 years. She was married to Joseph Alfred Brooks, who proceded her in death on January 31, 1956. A member of the First Baptist Church, she was also a member of the Weston Friendly Neighbors. Mrs. Brooks was known to her family and friends as "Mom" and is remembered by many an adult and child as the best popcorn ball chef in the world. Children from the area flocked to her door especially on Halloween night to be "treated" with popcorn balls and other homemade delights. She enjoyed seeing the neighbor children and their friends come over to learn the pleasures of swinging in her ancient lawn swing and almost always added to the fun with a plate of cookies and a glass of cool lemonade. A friendly, outgoing lady, she was ready to help anyone who neede it with a sympathetic ear, a dish of home cooked food, a kind word, a cheery smile. Despite her own disability and problems, Mrs. Brooks remained active and alert until recent months when age and illness began to take their toll. She was lovinly cared for by her son, Wallace Bell, of the home, her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Horseman, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Horseman Jr. and children, as long as it was possible to keep her in her own home. Survived by her daughter, Pauline Horseman, and son Wallace Bell both of Weston, she is also survived by another son, Richard P. Brooks of San Diego, California. She leaves two grandsons and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 1980, at ten o'clock in the Vaughn Funeral Chapel. Rev. S.E. Moore will officiate and Mrs. Maurice Schindler will accompany the soloist, Rev. Larry Bernard, on the organ. Pallbearers will be K.B. Horseman, Herbie Horseman, Steve Horseman, John Collier, Scott Vaughn, and Chuck Sebus.
