He had been suffering with the chills for some time, and was considerably weakened thereby, although not confined to his bed. On the day of his death he went to work in the field, and becoming overheated, his system was not strong enough to enable him to recover, and he died in a few hours after quitting work. He leaves a young wife and babe, together with a large number of friends and relations, to mourn his sudden taking off. ** Monroe City News Saturday, 19 July 1879 Melson-At the residence of her son J. L. Melson, in the edge of Ralls county, on Wednesday, July 16th, of inflammatory rheumatism, Mrs. Melson, wife of John D. Melson. Deceased removed with her husband from Virginia to this State some twenty years ago, and settled on the place where she died. A few years ago they removed to Shelbyville, and deceased was down on a visit to her children when the Messenger of Death called her. Her funeral was preached at DeMoss Chapel, Thursday morning, by Rev. Starr, of this city. ** Monroe City News 22 May 1884 Ralls Co. Record, 14th: Cora Lee, youngest child of S. J. and Louisa F. Melson, died of brain fever at their residence in New London last night, aged one year and 16 days. The Record extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved parents in the sad loss of their little babe. *********
