Ray County, Missouri - Miscellaneous - Horseback Rider Over Car Richmond Missourian 1932 Horseback Rider Over Car. The Horse, However, Stopped in the Car’s Windshield - Smith Bates, 15, Injured Slightly. Smith Bates, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bates of northwest of Richmond, knows how a steeplechase rider feels when his horse balks at the jump. His mount, however, a diminutive pony, knows something that the average steeplechase horse does not know – how it feels to run into an automobile. Smith was riding his pony around a curve in the oiled Rayville road, near the Earl Lillard home, Sunday morning. A car driven by E.R. McGraw of Holt rounded the corner at the same time. Unfortunately, Smith was on the wrong side of the road. The pony reared, throwing its feet through McGraw’s windshield. Smith, unseated, sailed over the car and lit in the roadway behind it. Fortunately, the casualties were light. Smith received a badly wrenched back, and minor cuts and bruises. Yesterday his mother reported that he was able to be out of bed most of the time. The pony was cut by breaking glass. McGraw a nd his wife were uninjured. The car was considerably damaged. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
