Ray County, Missouri - Eldredge Howard Murdered, d. 1942 source: Richmond Missourian 1942 Find Murdered Taxi Man’s Body Eldredge Howard, Lexington Ngero, Shot to Death Near Henrietta This Morning. Eldredge Howard, 30, Lexington taxi-driver, Negro, was found dead in his car just west of Henrietta on the road leading to Camden, early this morning. Indications were that he had been murdered. The car was not damaged. He had been shot twice, once in the back of the head, the bullet emerging at the nose, and once in the back under the shoulder blade. The body was discovered by Joe Stockton. Charlie Smith reported that he heard shots at 2 o’clock this morning. His relatives report that he had eaten supper at 4 o’clock yesterday and, then leaving the house, had not been seen again. A car full of colored people going from Lexington to Richmond, reported that they had passed Howard going north, had seen him turn off Highway 13 to the left on the road leading to Camden at about 7:30 last night. They said they saw some one in the front seat with Howard, but could not tell whether the passenger were a white man or a light colored Negro. The inquest will be held at 7 o’clock Friday night. Dr. G.W. Gaines, county coroner, will conduct in inquest. E.A. Farris, prosecuting attorney, went to Henrietta this morning to investigate the case. He said at noon he would go to Lexington this afternoon.
