Ray County, Missouri - Miscellaneous - Kincaid Has Rifle Over a Hundred Years Old Richmond Missourian 5 MAR 1942 James H. Kincaid Has Rifle Over a Hundred Years Old James H. Kincaid, 232 Cunningham street has the deer rifle that his grandfather, James Kincaid, brought with him as a flintlock, in 1828 or 1829 to Ray County from Campbell County, Tennessee. James Kincaid was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia, August 28, 1804, and moved with his parents to Campbell County, Tenn., when he was eight years of age. He married Miss Sarah Craven, daughter of Richard Craven, sr., and they moved to Missouri after the first two children had been born in Tennessee. They were the parents of 14 children, 11 boys and 3 girls. After percussion caps come into use, Mr. Kincaid employed John Kelsey to make his gun over from a flintlock into a cap-and-ball rifle. He handed this rifle down to this son, Wiley Williams Kincaid, who carried the gun through the three days of the battle of Lexington, Mo., and then went on with General Sterling Price’s command, sending the gun back to his wife, who lived at her father-in-law’s all during the war. Federal soldiers would come to the Kincaid home and ask about the gun, but were never able to find it, it being hidden under the house, rolled up in a pair of old trousers. They threatened to burn the house, but Mrs. Wiley Kincaid was brave and dared them to burn the house, and never gave up the gun. After the civil war was over, Mr. Kincaid traded the rifle to Jack Cravens, his uncle. The gun was handed down to his son, the late J.B. Cravens, who gave it to his son, Fred Craven. When Fred went away with an engineering outfit, Mr. Kincaid gave the gun to James H. Kincaid, who treasures it as a family keepsake. James H. Kincaid should exhibit this gun at the 1942 Fall Festival, which might well have a class of premiums for old guns, to bring them out of hiding. He is the son of Wiley William Kincaid, whose wife was Cordelia Wilson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
