Ray County, Missouri Military Records - Hyder, Lawson, Is Prisoner Of Japs Richmond Missourian 1942 Paul Hyder, Lawson, Is Prisoner Of Japs Staff Sergeant Luther E. Hyder, previously mentioned in The Missourian as being one of the about 2,200 Americans captured by the Japs at Wake Island and other battle points in the orient, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hyder, of north of Lawson. He was stationed on Wake Island, when captured. He enlisted in the Marines on September 3, 1936, and served four years. In February, 1941, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and was sent to San Diego, then to Camp Elliott, back to San Diego, then to Pearl Harbor, and from there to Wake Island. For two and one-half years, he was spotter on the five-inch guns on the battleship Mississippi. He is an expert marksman, with a score of ninety-five and two-thirds with an automatic pistol.
