Febuary 22, 1906 The Hardin News GE Kelso Editor C O Mansur transacted business in Kansas City, Tuesday. *** Mr. And Mrs. Jonathan Shackelford were Carrollton visitors Monday. *** Mr and Mrs. Sam Bowman returned last Saturday from a month’s visit with relatives in Chicago and Fisher Ill. *** Monday, Dan Bowman was released from jail without any prosecution. Mr Bowman and wife left Tuesday for Hoisington, Kan. *** Mrs. Ella Baster and sister, Miss Carrie Booker left Tuesday for western Kansas to look at the land and will buy if favorable impressed. *** W A Dickson, of Pleasant Hill, is attending to business in Hardin this week. *** L. F. Ferguson has just received another car load of Jarboe’s popular flour. *** Miss Lavinia Hunt, student of Central Female College, visited her parents, Mr. And Mrs. E S Hunt, during the weekly vacation. *** Mrs. Cleary left yesterday for Oklahoma City, on a visit with her daughter Mrs. P N Holden. She was accompanied as far as Kansas City by her grandson James Flanagan. *** It has developed that C C Rowe has never paid any taxes or was never assessed and is not elegible to the office of Representation if elected. Mr Rowe is one of out best young men and we are soroy that he is do unfortunate in this affair. *** Having sold our Morton stock of merchandise to Wm Strain, we wish to thank the people for the courteous treatment we have received during the six years we have run the business at that place and we speak for him the same liberal patronage. Yours Repectfully, Stratton & Chase. *** Opie Wall and wife, of Dearborne are visiting relatives here and at Millville and attended the Yates Wall wedding. *** Sunday, Mrs. T J Foster gave Mr. Foster a birthday dinner. Those present were: J H Metrifield and family, Thos. Brashear and family, W E Fannon and family, J D Meyers and family, J W Meyers and family, M M Booten and wife Miss Anna O’Hare, Mrs. Hannah Meyers and David Killen. *** A SURPRISE A surprise of great magnitude was perpetrated on Mr. And Mrs. Homer Macey when they retruned home last Sunday evening. Immediately after their marriage they left Hardin and during the interim, R L Macey the father of the groom furnished the house in full, even the culinary department and the home greeted them was a thing of beautiful, and the surprise was so great that the young people could hardly express their gratitude and surprise. The mother of the bride and groom had supper prepared; the parents and the edito r shared their first meal in their new home. *** Miss Pearl Hess spent Saturday and Sunday in Norborne. *** Fred Brunworth left last Friday for Troy, Illinois, on a visit with his parents. *** James Stanley and Lorn Smart, of Wakenda visited with the family of W H Merrell, Sunday. *** Galen McGaugh, candidate for presiding judge and john Esrey of Richmond were in Hardin Saturday. *** Mrs. And Mrs. Jas. Wright, of near Morton are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine boy, born Thursday, February 15, 1906. *** Miss Lavia Dawson who has been visiting her sister Mrs. A B Hughes for several weeks is visiting in Kansas City this week. *** There is a crew of men here this week setting poles for a new line of the Home Telephone Co., of Kansas City which will run from Excelsior Springs east. The company already has a line to Excelsior Springs. *** Wm Long a fireman of the Wabash come up from Moberly Monday on a visit with his many friends. He does not forget the News and the News remembers Billie 52 times a year. *** Ray Lindale and Jas. Burnett, medical students of Kansas City, and Mrs. Hannah Rosenthal student of the Ladies Baptist College of Lexington, visited the family of W F Tindall, Saturday and Sunday. *** Mrs. Elzora Bradshaw, who has been visiting her sister Mrs. Oe Wall, of Morton, left last Thursday for her home near Winfield, Kansas. She was accompanied as far as Kansas City by her nephew Warner Wall, The News will follow Mrs. Bradshaw. *** Emil Hannz east of town, I A Mennick and Frank Nelson south east of town have been dragging the road this spring and there is a marked improvement along the farms of these enterprising men. The cause is worthy of imitation. *** A NEW BRIDGE The county court at its last session orderd that the bridge committee advertise and take bids for the construction of a bridge across Crooked River west of Marion Gibson’s. This bridge supplies a long felt want and gives the people west of Hardin and Crooked River access to one of the best towns in of the way to cross the river at the Buffalo bridge. It also gives our people a more direct route to Richmond. *** FOR PRESIDING JUDGE We have the authority to formally announce the name of Galen McGaugh as a candidate for presiding judge of Ray county. Judge McGaugh has been judge of the Eastern district for four years and has made a record that is open to all and upon this record he is willing to make his present race. Perhaps, no man is beter known in the county, personally and officially. He belongs to one of the best pioneer families of this imperial county and has been a sterling democrat all of his life. *** Allen R Broughten of Hardin, the leading candidate in the race for the democratic nomination for recorder of Ray county, is here today talking to the many Ray county voters who come over the line into the city. Mr. Broughton is an old school teacher and a graduate of the State university and is a man perfectly fitted for the place he seeks. He is a very pleasant gentleman to meet. The groom is a model young man and is an adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. O J Berry, north of town and bids fair to be one of the foremost farmers of the future. The bride is an accomplished young lady. The bridal pair will visit a few weeks in Oklahoma. The News joins a host of friends in extending congratulations. *** CRAVENS – MILLIGAN Wednesday February 21 at high noon, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Milligan, in the presence of a few friends and relatives Joseph D Cravens and Miss Elizabeth J Milligan plighted the marriage vows, Rev. I N Roberts, of Stewartsville officiating. The groom has lived near Russellville where he has a host of friends and the bride is no less popular than her manly husband. Today the groom’s parents celebrated the event with an infair dinner for the wedded couple. *** YATES – WALL Walter Yates, of Morton, and Miss Ella Wall were married at 8 o’clock Wednesday evening, Feb. 21, 1906 at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. O c Wall of Millville. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T J Yates, one of the best families of the county, beside having a good family tree he has lived a most exemplary life, which has won the highest esteem of a wide circle of admitting friends. The bride is a charming and accomplished young lady and is no less popular than her chosen life partner. They will live the insueing year on Mr. Yates’ farm north-west of Morton. The News extends congratulation. *** KIRKPATRICK – BATES Samuel M Kirkpatrick and Miss Frances Duvall Bates were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J F Bates, north of town, Tuesday, February 20, 1906 at 7 o’clock, p. m., by Rev. Guy B Duff, pastor of the Presbyterian church here. The groom is a son of the late David Kirkpatrick of the Morton country and one of the most popular young farmers of the county and by his friendly and upright life has won the esteem of all his acquaintances. The bride is a beautiful and charming young lady with rare attainments, supplemented by a most aimable disposition. After the marriage vows were plighted and congratulations the guests were invited into the spacious dining room where a well prepared feast awaited them. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick will go to keeping house in the house soon to be vacated by T J Yates. The News wishes this worthy couple along, prosperous and happy life. *** Miss Nora Prather, of Kansas City, visited her brother and wife, Mrs. And Mrs. Jesse Prather, Sunday. *** Mrs. J T McGee, of Norborne, visited in Hardin last Thursday evening. *** Homer Chambers, of near Lexington Junction is visiting relatives here this week. *** Mrs. Elizabeth Porterfield, of MacArthur, Oklahoma becomes a new reader of The News. *** J D McCauley moved with his family last Friday into Mrs. Maples’ house in the south part of town. *** Miss Lelia Brown, of Jacksonville, Illinois who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Sarilda Smith returned to her home last Thursday. Dr. G W Smith accompanied here as far as Mosby. *** Jesse Lytten, of near Clinton, who has been visiting relatives in this and the Mile’s Point vicinity for two months, left Monday for Kansas City. He was accompanied by his half sister, Miss May Bond. *** The Aid Society of the Methodist Church will meet with Mrs. Jas. Lentz, next Tuesday to quilt two quilts. The entire membership is urged to attend. *** Emil and Alvin Haanz saw a red fox near their home Tuesday and Alvin got on a horse with a gun and got so close that he shot and killed the fox. *** J E Shackelford and wife, who have been visiting relatives here and the country north of town for two weeks, returned to their home in Braymer last Friday. Mr. Shackelford swelled our till to the amount of a $. *** Mr. and Mrs. J F Minnick, south-east of town, gave the young people a party last Thursday night. At a proper hour refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Those present were: C Hollar, Ralph Seward, Frank Buchanan, Kemp Hoover, Robert Boggess, John Summers, Leo Kenton, Lelia Seward, Sylvia Summers, May Hoover, Susie Buchanan. *** THE OLDEST PERSON IN CARROLL CO. Mrs. Anna Ray Wightman of Plymouth, this county, is perhaps, the oldest person in Carroll county. On Friday of last week she celebrated her 100th anniversary. She was born near Niagara Fall, Canada, in 1806. She has short visit to Rayville the latter part of last week with her uncle Elliott and wife. Mr. Elliott, is very sick. A wonderful memory. Remembers the war of 1812, heard the firing of the battle of Queenstown Heights. Soon after that they moved to New York, where her father was drowned in 1814 in the Genesee river, near where the city of Rochester now stands. May 24, 1825 she married Samuel Wightman. In 1838 they moved to Illinois overland driving a team. Her husband died in 1863. She moved to Carroll county in 1869. She was the mother of eleven children, seven of them living. The youngest is now fifty six, has thirty one grand children and twelve great great grand children. Norborne Leader *** Mrs. Grace Wall, of near Millville, was visiting Grace Linney the latter part of last week. *** Tom Magee, of Norborne, visited the family of W H Merrell Sunday. *** Mrs. Chas Stapp visited in Kansas City yesterday. *** ACCIDENTALLY POISONED Monday night, Mr. and Mrs. W B Hughes realized that they had been accidentally poisoned and sent for a physician, soon medical aid and kind neighbors were giving relief. It was evident the poison was taken in the tea drank at supper. Mr. Hughes drank two cups and was deathly sick, but Mrs. Hughes did not drink a full cup and did not suffer so much. At this writing both are much improved. It is the belief that had medical aid not been summoned as soon, the accident would probably have proved fatal. Later – it was discovered that the cook had used Jimson weed dried with saltpetre instead of tea. This had been prepared as a relief for asthma. *** MRS. KATE COMER DIES “Aunt” Kate Comer died at the home of her grand-daughter, Mrs. Post, of near Braymer, Sunday, February 18, 1906. Mrs. Comer was about 83 years old and had spent most of her life in Ray county. She was the mother of Daniel of Kansas, William of Kansas City, Jesse, Shawnee, Okla, George of Regal, and Mrs. Florence Barham. She was a sister to Mrs. Wiggington, of Richmond and Lafayette Branstetter of near Millville. She had a wide acquaintance in this county and was a friend to every acquaintance. Funeral services were conducted at the New Hope church after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery. *** A PECULIAR MISSOURI DEATH Robert Kerner, proprietor of the Boonville Foundry and machine works, was found dead early Saturday morning with his head between two fence pickets. The supposition is that he was stricken with apoplexy or stumbled and fell against the fence and was unable to release himself. *** Advertisements in this issue Dr. L O McKee regular visit at Stapp’s Drug Store Feb 24.
