Ray County, Missouri - Richmond Democrat transcription: September 6, 1883 Richmond Democrat 6 SEPT 1883 Page 3 A little nine-year-old son of James Searcy, who lives up in the country between Vibbard and Haller, happened to get hold of a small 22 caliber pistol that belonged to an older brother, one week ago last Sunday and while playing with it, the weapon was discharged, the ball striking on the left side of the neck in front, passed nearly through lodging in the rear on the right side. He lingered in great pain until last Sunday when death relieved his sufferings. Thus a bright young life wet out all because a young man thought it was necessary that he should own a pistol. The practice of owing pistols by young men should be discouraged.
