Ray County, Missouri - Richmond Democrat transcription: October 11, 1883 Richmond Democrat 11 OCT 1883 Man Killed On Thursday evening last J. D. Bowman, and J.H. Pugh, two farmers who reside near Russellville, in this county had an altercation, and in the melee Bowman was cut on the arm with a knife severing an artery from the effects of which he died at 3 o’clock on the following morning. We have heard several different statements of the affair from which we gather the facts stated below. Bowman was a renter and lived on a farm belonging to Pugh’s sister. He had some corn to sell and Pugh bargained with him for it at a certain price. Later Bowman sold the corn to another man. The two men met on Thursday at the house of a man named Turner, whose wife was very sick and quarreled about the matter. One invited the other outside to settle it, but after they got out to the wood pile, they were ordered off by Turner on account of their noisy and boisterous conduct. They went away a little distance, and had a fight. After Bowman was cut he was taken to Pugh’s house, and cared for and we learn a doctor who was called said the wound was doing all right. Our information just at this point is not very full. On Friday morning Pugh came in and surrendered to Esquire J.S. DeMasters, of this city, who released him on a bond of $2,500. His preliminary trial will be held tomorrow at this place, when it is presumed the true inwardness of the affair will come out. It was an unfortunate occurrence and one that has wrapped two families in deep gloom. We casually learn that both parties were drinking at the time but we do not give this as a fact. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
