Ray County, Missouri Richmond Conservator transcription; November 5, 1896 (page 1) This is a transcription of the newspaper articles relating to the triple murders of Mrs. Jesse Winner and her two young children Richmond Conservator, Thursday, November 5, 1896 (page 1) Mrs. Winner’s Relatives Will Prosecute Postmaster A. B. Conrow, of this city, received the following letter last Saturday, and upon inquiry ascertained that Mrs. Winner, the woman who was murdered near the Poor farm in this county, Monday night of last week, was the person referred to in the letter. Mr. Conrow answered at once, and we should not be surprised to see the writer at any time to assist in running down the brutal murderers. The letter is as follows: Hicksville, O., Oct 29, 1896, To the Postmaster at Richmond, Mo.: Sir:-- We noticed in the telegraphic news of yesterday’s daily papers, the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, and also in the Chicago Daily Herald an account of the murder of Mrs. Jesse Winner. We are anxious to know the facts, for we fear that she is the sister of our adopted daughter, as the description given answers for her and her children. Her maiden name was Sharp. If Eva is the unfortunate victim,no pains will be spared to prosecute the murderer. Answer immediately. James Wright Richmond Conservator, Thursday, November 5, 1896 (page 1) The Winner Murder Mystery. The Winner murder is as great a mystery as it was on the morning of the discovery of the terrible crime. Jesse Winner and Lon Lackey are still in jail with the awful charge of having committed the murders or at least of knowing who committed them. They will have a preliminary examination on Monday before Justice Ridgell. So far not a scrap of evidence has been produced showing that they had any connection with the crime, but the circumstances are all against them. On Monday the county court offered a reward of $350 for the arrest of the murderers and Gov. Stone will also be asked to offer a similar sum. For the good name of her county and community, we hoped that the inhuman butcher will soon be brought to justice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by County Coordinator USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
