Mr. Brown was associated with Powell Bros. Implement company here for 15 years prior to their sale of the firm. He then became sales representative for the western half of Missouri for Schreiber Mills, St. Joseph, Mo., which job he held for 13 years. He retired because of poor health. Since 1958, he has been salesman for Rohrbach Chevrolet company. Mr. Brown was born April 3, 1890, in Hamilton, Mo., a son of Dr. Tinsley Brown, sr., of Chio, and Mary R. Austin Brown, of new York. He had lived in Richmond since October 1926, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church here. On Jan. 14, 1914, he was married to Miss Gayle Gartside of Kingston, Mo., who survives. A son, James G. Brown, died Feb. 11, 1945, while in the Merchant Marines in World War II. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Menzi A. Brown of Hiawatha, Kans; one daughter Mrs. Eldon Slaughter, Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Miss Merle Brown of Kansas City, Mo., three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Thurman chapel here. The Rev. W.G. Bensberg will officiate, assisted by the Rev. John Vanlandingham. Burial will be in Highland cemetery, Hamilton, Mo. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 4 APR 1960 Monday Page 6 Last Rites for Christian Skiles Are Held Today Funeral services for Christian Lee Skiles, 80, Richmond retired miner, were held this afternoon at the Quest Lile Funeral Home. Rev. J.O. Craig officiated, with burial in Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Quest Lile Funeral Home. He died at 1:20 a.m. Saturday in a St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Feb. 29, 1880 in Greencastle, Mo., a son of Thomas Skiles of Illinois and Elizabeth Rondebush Skiles of Pennsylvania. He lived in Ray County most of his life. One brother, Charles Skiles, preceded him in death in December of 1955. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 4 APR 1960 Monday Page 6 Jesse Yoakum, 63, Died This Morning In Knoxville Home Jesse Yoakum, 63, of the Knoxville community, died at 2 a.m. this morning at this home. He was born Nov. 5, 1896, in Ray County one of 10 children of James E. Yoakum and Rosa McCubbins Yoakum. He had lived in Knoxville community most of this life. He was married Dec. 23, 1920 to Goldie Watson who survives. Also surviving are one son, Tommy Yoakum of Kansas City, Kans; one daughter, Mrs. Ross Wyss of Independence; four brothers, Claude Yoakum of Polo, Pryor Yoakum of Kansas City, Pearly Yoakum of Richmond, and Albert Yoakum of Braymer; four grandchildren, Larry and Kay Wyss of Independence and David and Linda Yoakum of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sister, and one son. Funeral servies will be held at 2 Wednesday at the Knoxville Church with the Rev. C.C. Donnahue officiating. Rev. M.O. Eisenhauer will assist in the service. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Quest Lile Funeral Home. Mr. Yoakum was a veteran of World War I. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 12:30 on the service date. W.A. Lindsey officiating. Burial was in Rowland Cemetery near Orrick. Mrs. Johnson died at 12 p.m. Thursday at her home. She was born Sept. 24, 1905, in Orrick a daughter of Edward Morgan and Ethel Lee Morgan. She was married to jack Johnson of Excelsior Springs. She is survived by two sons, William E. Gillespie, of Kansas City and Harold Gillespie of the home in Kansas City; two daughter, Mrs. Mary Storms and Mrs. Bonnie Sue Wise, both of Kansas City; one brother, Frank Morgan of Orrick; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Sparks of Kansas City, Mrs. Louise Dagley of Excelsior Springs, and Mrs. Albert Good of Camden; and two grandchildren. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Mr. Oliphant Died Sunday in Seminole, Okla. Alexander Oliphant, 54, of Seminole, Okla., well know in ray County, died Sunday at 5 a.m. in the University Hospital in Oklahoma City as the result of a heart attack. He was the son of the late Alexander Oliphant and Pearl Smith Oliphant, both of Ray County. He is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Suzanne, of the home; a son, Alexander, who is in the service overseas two brothers, Ralph and George Oliphant of Holdenville, Okla.; and a sister, Mrs. Carroll C Moss, also of Holdenville. Funeral services will be held at 2 Tuesday at the Methodist Chruch in Seminole, Okla. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Former Resident Died Last Week In Kansas City Edward M. Flaherty, Sr., 73, of 300 Flora Avenue of Kansas City, formerly of Ray County died last Monday at the St. Joseph Hospital where he had been a patient five weeks. He was born in Louis, Kans. He was a retired railroad car inspector for the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Kathryn W. Flaherty, formerly of the old Sunshine community; two sons, Edward M. Flaherty, Jr. of the home, and John W Flaherty of Kansas City, and six grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday at the Wilks Chapel at Kansas City. Graveside services were later held at the Machpelah Cemetery at Lexington. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Last Rites for Vester O. Cox Are Held Sunday Last rites for Vester Olin Cox, 58, of Elkhorn were held Sunday afternoon at the rock Falls Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Lee officiating. Burial was in Crowley Cemetery under the direction of Quest Lile Funeral Home. Mr. Cox was, for 21 years, owner and operator of the Elkhorn Grocery Store until 1951. He died at 6 a.m. Friday morning at the Ray County Memorial Hospital. He had been in poor health 28 years. He was born Aug. 30, 1901 near Polo one of nine children of Edward Cox and Zella Mercer Cox, both of Missouri. He had lived in the Elkhorn community since 1920. He was married Sept. 3, 1927 to Jane Allison of Rayville, who survives. Also surviving are three brothers, Tom Cox of Mission, Kans., Robert L. Cox of Kansas City, Kans., and Everett Cox of Richmond; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Dickey of Liberty, Mrs. Lucy Rimmer of Excelsior Springs, and Mrs. Eva Riegel of Mason City, Ill. Mrs. Molly McNeal, 90, of Winfield, Kans., formerly of Richmond, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after an illness of two weeks. She was born Jan. 1, 1870 in Ray county a daughter of E.P. Hill and Nancy Ellen Richards Hill. She had lived in Ray County most of her life. She was married to Watt McNeal, who preceded her in death. She is survived by two son, Donald McNeal of Wichita, Kans, and Guy McNeal of St. Paul, Minn.; two daughter, Mrs. J.M. Baxter of Winfield, Kans., and Mrs. Lawrence Griener of Eldorado, Kans.; one sister, Mrs. Dave Hankins of Richmond; seven grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. McNeal are incomplete. She was a member of the Winfield Methodist Church. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Half Brother of Camden Woman Died In St. Louis Mose Pulse, 76, of St. Louis, half brother of Mrs. James Mansell of Camden, died March 22 at his home after an illness of one week. He was born in Camden, a son of John Lewis Pulse and Nancy Virginia Claughton Pulse. His wife Amanda, preceded him in death. He is survived by several brothers and sisters. Brown, 80, of North institute Street, were held this afternoon at the Thurman Funeral Home. Elder R.M. Willett of Platte City officiated, assisted by Elder William Pollard of Independence and Elder Paul Brown of Kansas City. Burial was in Richmond Memory Gardens under the direction of Thurman Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown, a retired rural mail carrier, died at 9:15 Saturday morning at the Ray County Memorial Hospital after an illness of six weeks. He was born Aug. 2, 1879 west of Richmond, a son of W.T. Brown and Sarah E. White Brown, both of Ray County. He was married Aug. 24, 1904 to Ella Hall of Plattsburg, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Dorris D. Brown of Skaneatales, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Smith of Richmond, Miss Viola Brown of Plattsburg and Mrs. Stanley C. Atkinson of Webster, S.D.; two brothers, John F. Brown and J. Arthur Brown of Richmond; one sister, Mrs. William Pollard of Independence; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Brown was a member of the New Hope Primitive Baptist church and was a deacon in the church. Pallbearers included Jim Smith, Leon Smith, Allen Brown, Howard Pollard, Forrest Thompson and Nobel McGinnis. Honorary pallbearers included Ivan Weber, Clyde White, Fred Wyss, Earl Thomas, Reed Schooler, Charles Gorham, Sam Cook and Farris Thompson. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Carpenter of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Lucinda Luncy of Billings, Mont. Funeral services will be held at 2 Thrusday at the Clark’s Chapel in St. Joseph. Earl M. Clemens officiating. Burial was in the Roland Cemetery near Orrick under the direction of Quest Lile Funeral Home. Mrs. Woods died at 12:20 a.m. Friday at the Sharp Rest Home in Excelsior Springs after an illness of 10 years. She was born June 19, 1869, near Orrick, a daughter of Archie Camden and Polly Allen Camden. She was married Aug. 11, 1892 to Willis L. Woods who preceded her in death on Nov. 30, 1933. She is survived by one son, Walker Woods of Orrick with whom she made her home since 1933; one daughter, Mrs. Flossie Vandiver of Camden; three brothers, George Camden of Parnell, Mo., Harv Camden of Orrick, and John Camden of Kansas City; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Hilton Are Held Today Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hilton, 72, of Hardin were held this afternoon at the Hardin Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Warner officiating. Burial was in Lavelock Cemetery under the direction of Knipschild and Borcherding Funeral Home. Mrs. Hilton died suddenly Friday at 12:30 p.m. at her home in Hardin of a heart attack. She was born Jan. 9, 1888, near Carrollton a daughter of Jacob S. Atwood and Nancy Goodson Atwood. She had lived in Hardin 53 years. She was married March 26, 1910, to Ruby Clare Hilton of Hardin, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 27 at their home. Mrs. Hilton was a member of the Hardin Baptist Church. Mrs. Hilton was a partner in the Willeford and Hilton Hardware and Implement store in Hardin, and is the president of the Home Savings Assn. in Hardin. She is survived by her husband, R.C. Hilton of the home; three sons, Dr. Wallace ihlton of Liberty, Richard Clare Hilton of Houston, Tex., and Frank Edwin Hilton of Carrollton; one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Tye of Eureka, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. R.A. Beck of San Gabriel, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Mrs. Eva Fields Wife of Former Judge, Is Dead Mrs. Eva Mae Fields, 70, wife of former presiding judge of the Ray county court, Hugh Fields, died at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ray County Memorial Hospital. She had been seriously ill the past year and a half. Mrs. Fields was born Nov. 2, 1889, in Ray county, a daughter of Lafayette and Olive Craig Cox natives of Kentucky, and had lived in the county all of her life. In July 1911, she was married to Hugh C. Fields of Ray county who survives. She also is survived by three sons, Monroe and Eugene Fields of Rayville and Randolph Fields of Excelsior Springs; one sister, Mrs. Abe Joiner, Richmond, and six grandchildren. Four brothers preceded her in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Dockery church with the Rev. Ronnie Walstrom officiating. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens. The Richmond News Richmond, Missouri 1960 Two Divorces Granted in Court Two divorces were granted by Judge Arthur Rogers in Circuit Court Saturday. Gene Edward Allen was divorced from Mildred Marguerette Allen and Mr. Allen was given custody of a minor child. Charles H. Utley was divorced from Betty Ann Utley.
