BALL DIED IN CALIFORNIA ON MAY 19 News was received in Richmond the last of the week of the death of Mrs. J. E. Ball of this city, which occurred in Alhambra, California, Friday morning, May 19. She and her daughter Miss Bess Ball went to California last fall for an extended visit and the news of her death came as a great shock to our people who had known her for so long. The body will arrive here tomorrow, when the funeral service will be considered by Rev. Ernest Jones of the Methodist church. We will give a more extended notice in our next issue of the life of this grand Christian woman. ------ Richmond Conservator, Thursday, June 1, 1939 MRS. J. E. BALL BROUGHT HOME FOR BURIAL, FRIDAY The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Ball, whose death occurred in Alhambra, California, May 19, and was briefly chronicled in last week's issue, was held Friday afternoon at the Brothers Funeral Home. Services were conducted by the pastor Rev. Ernest Jones. Internment was in the family lot in Sunny Slope cemetery. Mrs. Ball was born Oct 20, 1856 and was 82 years of age at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Jabez Shotwell, a member of the Shotwell family that has lived in Ray county for more than a hundred years. She was married to james E. Ball of thiscity on January 17, 1877. Mr. Ball was for many years one of the leading attorneys of northwest Missouri. He preceded her in death passing away on August 18, 1907. She is survived by seven children, four sons and three daughters, namely Dr. J. E. Ball of Kansas City, Frank M. Ball of Topeka, Kansas, Harry L. Ball of Whittier, California, Miss Ethel Ball of Alhambra, California, Mrs. J. W. Rowntree of San Gabriel, California, Miss Ethel Ball of Alhambra, California, and Miss Bess Ball of Richmond. Since early girlhood Mrs. Ball has been a member of the Methodist church and her life was so lived that she walked in the fear and admonition of the Lord and had in her heart genuine love and sympathy for everyone. She was a charter member of the Lydia Ewing Bible class and of the Ladies Aid Society of her church and her activities were only lessened because of advancing years. Her long life here and her interest in her church and in the better things of life endeared her to many friends and acquaintances. Las fall with her daughter Miss Bess, she went to California to spend the winter, and the news of her death came as a great shock to our people. She will be greatly missed by those who had known her for so long.
