August 9, 1998 Kansas City Star, The (MO) - August 10, 1998 Deceased Name: ROY WILLIAM BLANKENSHIP Roy William Blankenship, 82, Hardin, MO, passed away Saturday, August 9, 1998, at Liberty Hospital, Liberty, MO. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, August 11, at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, MO; burial in Lavelock Cemetery, north of Hardin. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be at 6:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to Lavelock Cemetery, Children's Mercy Hospital, or the donor's choice. Mr. Blankenship was born August 11, 1915, in Macon County, TN, to W.S. and Minnie Velma (Sadler) Blankenship. He married Ellen Lorene Howard of Rayville, MO, on July 20, 1935; she survives of the home. They had recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Additional survivors include four sons and their wives, Roy ''Sonny'' and Jean Blankenship, Hardin, MO, David and Karen Blankenship, Lexington, MO, Larry and Peggy Blankenship, Carrollton, MO, and Darrell and Lois Blankenship, Corder, MO; daughter, Nancy Cooper, Richmond, MO; brother, J.W. Blankenship, Richmond, MO; two sisters, Rosie Bowman, Hardin, MO, and Hazel Kennedy, Raytown, MO; 14 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Doris Ann Blankenship; and two brothers, Elvin Blankenship and M.S. "Mattie" Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship served as mayor of Hardin, MO, for three terms from the 1940s to 1960s. During his tenure as mayor, he was instrumental in implementing Hardin's first water and sewer system. Roy owned and operated Roy's Garage, Hardin Oil Company, and J.I. Case Implement Dealership. He was also a farmer before retiring in 1985.
