Lawson Review, Lawson, Missouri com. contributor: Jenna Zunker obit: Death of Mrs. W.P. Berten. Death came to Mrs. W.P. Berten Sunday night at 8:30 o’clock after an illness of several months. She made a hard fight for life and all that skilled physicians could do proved to no avail as God was ready for her to go to her home above that He had prepared for her and she expressed herself as being in readiness to accept the call, even though it was leaving loved ones here she would be with others whom she loved that had preceded her in death. Mrs. Dora E. Shelton Berten was born near Vibbard, January 1, 1878, died April 18, 1920. She was the daughter of David and Mary Shelton and was married to W.P. Berten February 6, 1917. Mrs. Berten was a member of the Christian church, having united and was baptized by the late W.C. Rogers in the year 1905 and she lived a good Christian life all these years. She is survived by the husband, two stepchildren, Roy and Gladys, mother, three brothers and one sister. The brothers are Albert, Lark L. and Thompson, and the sister, Mrs. Sarah Spencer, of Cooper county. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Christian church by C.F. Ward, of Plattsburg, who used John 14 as the subject for his talk as it was the request of the deceased to use that chapter for a text. Burial was in the Lawson cemetery. ----- Lawson Review, Lawson, Missouri 1920 Mrs. Dora Ellen Berten. Mrs. Dora Ellen Berten, nee Shelton, was born January 1, 1878. Died at home in Lawson, Mo., April 18, 1920. Mrs. Berten had an attack of pneumonia several weeks ago from which she never recover and it became apparent several days before her death that her chance of regaining her health was very slight. She, herself, seemed to be perfectly conscious that the end was near and she gave the fullest assurance to all that she was ready for the change. She was converted to Christianity in September 1905 and joined the Christian church. To say that she lived a consistent Christian life is not to exaggerate the truth. She was undoubtedly a good woman and for that reason will be missed the more. She was married to W.P. Berten February 6, 1917, who, with her three brothers, Albert, Lark and Thompson Shelton and one sister, Mrs. Sallie Spencer, survive. This was a real union whose fruit was the happiness of contentment. The writer is aware how useless are words of comfort when death has severed human hearts but if a strong faith in Jesus and the memory of a splendid life and character are worth anything then Mrs. Berten has left to her family and friends a rich inheritance. The people of our entire town join in deepest sympathy with the bereaved ones in this their time of sorrow and bid them look to Him in whose presence there can be no death. - A Friend.
