Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - James Matt Cates (1869-1959) Richmond News, June 5, 1959 Ex-Resident Dies Soon After Richmond Visit Mr. Matt Cates, 2635 North 18th street, Kansas City, Kans., died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. George Doran of Ogden, Ia. They had just returned from a trip to Richmond and Kansas City when he became ill and died upon arrival at his granddaughter's home. He was born on Feb. 3, 1869, in Tennessee the son of Richard Cates, Tennessee, and Jan (Slaughter) Cates, Iowa. He moved to the Ray county area with his parents when he was a small boy, and he lived here until 40 years ago when he moved to Kansas City. On Dec. 10, 1890, he was united in marriage with May Orleana Douglass of Ray County who preceded him in death. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. A. Karl, 2639 North 18th, Kansas City, Kans.; three brothers, Roe Cates, Richmond, Jess Cates, Osceola, Mo., a halfbrother, George Cates, 2037 Kensington, Kansas City; and one granddaughter, Mrs. George Doran, Ogden, Ia. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thurman Funeral Home with Rev. J. O. Craig officiating. Burial will take place at the Sunny Slope Cemetery. Mr. Cates was a retired carpenter, and a member of the Methodist church in Ogden, Ia. Ray County Conservator, June 5, 1959 Services Saturday For Matt Cates Funeral services were held Saturday at the Thurman Funeral Home, for James Matt Cates, of Kansas City, Kansas, who died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. George Doran, Ogden, Ia., Wednesday, June 3, at 9:30 p.m. Mr. Cates and Mrs. Doran had just returned from a visit to Kansas City and Richmond, and was getting out of the car when he suffered a fatal heart attack. He was born February 3, 1869 and was the son of Richard Cates and Jane Slaughter of Tennessee. He moved to Ray County with his parents when a small child. He was a carpenter. He moved to Kansas City about 40 years ago. On December 10, 1890, he was married to May Orleana Douglass of Ray County, who preceded him in death in October of 1957. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Ogden, Ia. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. A. Karl, Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, Roe Cates, Richmond, and Jess Cates,Osceola, one half brother, George Cates, Kansas City; one granddaughter, Mrs. George Doran, Ogden, Ia. Rev. J. O. Craig conducted the funeral services and burial was in Sunny Slope cemetery.
