Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - Cantwell, L. C, Major d. date b. d. cem. City Cemetery sp: Elizabeth F. Hayes pd. p. Ray County Conservator obit: The Sudden Death of Major L.C. Cantwell. Last Saturday morning Maj. L.C. Cantwell died suddenly of heart disease at his home near Swanwick. The news of his death was a great surprise to his friends in this city. While they knew he was not in the best of health there was no thought of him passing away so suddenly. He was in town of Thursday and spent some time in the Conservator office and said he was felling better than for some weeks past. On Friday he worked in his field sowing oats. At an early hour on Saturday morning he was heard to groan several times by the members of his family and immediate attention was given him. The neighbors were sent for but before they arrived his soul had taken its flight to the great unknown. Major Cantwell was a native of Ohio, was about 57 years of age, and came to Missouri when quite a young man, locating in Richmond. He served as a soldier in the Federal army during the war, and after peace had been declared settled down on his farm. After the war he served one term as Internal Revenue Collector of this district and two terms as postmaster at Richmond, retiring from the latter office in 1885. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth F. Hayes in Indiana. Of this union eight children were born, seven of whom are living. Mrs. Cantwell died some seven years ago. Maj. Cantwell was an honest, upright citizen and was universally respected. He no doubt had his faults, as all of us have, but the memory of these should be forgotten and only the good he accomplished remembered. His remains were interred in the city cemetery on Sunday, but as no announcement had been made in regard to the hour very few of our people attended. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
