Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - Stephen Forcen d. June 30, 1883 Richmond Democrat 5 JUL 1883 Fatal Sunstroke. A fatal case of Sunstroke occurred on Saturday last, 2 miles north east of Knoxville, in this county. Stephen Forcen, a man 76 years old was out in the field hoeing the corn, when he became very warm and thirsty. In this condition he drank a large quantity of water, some say, three quarts, and went to the shade of a tree and laid down. In a few moments he began to cry out in great pain and began to vomit, and told those who came to his relief that he was going to die. This occurred a little before noon, and he lingered in great pain about 12 hours before death relieved his sufferings. When persons are very warm they should be careful not so drink much cold water as it brings on congestion, and often proves fatal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives bys: Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
