Ray County Conservator obit: Death of Mrs. Melvina D. Hughes. Died at the home of her son-in-law Downing Miller, at Harrisonville on Monday, Sept. 11th, 1893, Mrs. Melvina D. Hughes, at the age of 86 years, from old age, hastened by paralsis. The deceased was born in the state of Kentucky in the years 1808, and moved with her parents to Missouri when quite small. She was married in 1826 to Allen Hughes, to Allen Hughes, oldest brother of James and Joseph S. Hughes, of this city. she was the mother of eight children, seven daughters and one son, only three of whom survive her. Mrs. Martha Price, of Kansas City; Mrs. Downing Miller of Harrisonville, and Mrs. James A. Davis of Richmond. Two years after her marriage she joined the Baptist church, and for sixty-six years followed in the footsteps of the Master. She was a dutiful child, a loving wife, a kind and tender mother and a devout Christian, and leaves behind a name without spot of blemish, which will be cherished with sweet recollections by her relatives Funeral services were held at the residence of her son-in-law, James A. Davis, Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock by Dr. Wm. Rothwell of Liberty, Mo., who had known her for many years, and told of her many virtues in the most touching and impressive language. After services the remains were taken to the city cemetery and deposited in the grave where they will rest in peace until the resurrection morn.
