Hardin News, Hardin, Ray County, Missouri; Front Page obit: Obituary. Maria Louisa Hamer, daughter of James and Sophia Hamer, was born near Mitchell, Indianna, August 26, 1841, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.R. Broughton, January 1, 1916; age 74 years, 4 months and 6 days. She was married, July 7, 1859, to Samuel B. Bright, at Mitchell Indiana. To this union ten children were born; eight sons and two daughters; John H., Anjil R. and Albert S., of the Russellville country, Edward E., Arch, Charles W., and Ida D. Broughton, of Morton, Wm. H., of Richmond and Sarah and Claude who died in infancy. Her husband preceeded her in death six years, dying on December 13, 1909. Besides her children, she leaves to mourn her death two brothers, William Hamer of Braymer, and Harrison Hamer of Iantha, Mo., twenty-two grandchildren; and a great number of friends. Sister Bright came with her husband to Missouri before the war, but returned to Indiana during the war, returning to Hardin, Ray county, Missouri, in March 1883; and has lived in this county ever since, until her death. She was converted and joined the Methodist church nearly fifty years ago. Her membership had been at Morton for the past thirty five years. She was a good Christian and a devoted mother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially by her children and grandchildren who knew more of her gentleness, helpfulness and patience. She was very much devoted to her family. We preached her funeral at Hickory Grove church to a large audience of relatives and sympathizing friends and laid her body to rest in the cemetery near the church, The Lord’s blessings rest upon the bereaved ones.
