Ray County Conservator com. death date & cemetery per cemetery records obit: A Sudden Death. Mr. John H. Rodman Dies at His Home near Richmond of Heart Disease. Last Friday morning Mr. John H. Rodman, one of our old and substantial citizens, died at his home four miles southeast of Richmond, very suddenly of heart disease. He had arisen early in the morning, eaten a hearty breakfast and gone out in the garden to work. Near the hour of eleven o’clock one of the neighbors came to see him on some business, and Mrs. Rodman went out to call him and found him in the garden lying on his face across the hot-bed which he had prepared for planting seeds. She raised him up and found that he was dead, and from his appearance he had evidently been lying in that position several hours. The deceased had been subject to heart disease in former years, but his health had been much better this spring and he had talked a great deal about his improved condition and his sudden taking away was a surprise to his family. His absent children were immediately telegraphed for and all except his son Al Rodman were present at the burial. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by the Masonic fraternity of which he had long been a member. Rev. J.H. Ledbetter preached the funeral sermon at the M.E. church, South, and told of the many virtues possessed by the deceased. At the conclusion of the at the church the body was taken in charge by the Masonic fraternity and conveyed to the grave, where, with appropriate ceremonies, it was laid peacefully away. John H. Rodman was born June 3d, 1826, in Perry county, Ohio, and at the time of his death was in his 67th year. He moved to Marion county, Indiana, where, in 1848, he was married to Miss Lydia Jennings. There were born to them three sons and three daughters, all of who 1868, and settled on the farm where he died. He had for many years been an earnest and consistent member of the Methodist church. He was a kind neighbor, a true friend and an honest, conscientious man, and in his death our community has lost a worthy citizen. We extend to his bereaved widow, and children our warmest sympathy in their hour of sore affliction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
