Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - Elizabeth Frances McLaughlin Rowland (1849 - 1927) Elizabeth Frances McLaughlin Rowland Clipping in family scrapbook; marked as from Orrick Times Death of a Former Resident Elizabeth Frances Rowland, widow of Lyman H. Rowland, died at the home of her son, Arthur J. Rowland, Archie, Mo, Monday, May 30, 1927. Mrs. Rowland, whose maiden name was McLaughlin, was born Dec. 17, 1849 in Davis Co., MO. At the age of 3 she came with her family to Ray Co. She was married May 10, 1866 to Lyman H. Rowland. Her husband died in Orrick March 2, 1922. They were the parents of 10 children, six died in childhood. Three daughters, Mrs. J.W. Raines, Liberty, MO, Mrs. E.M. Proffitt, Richmond, Mo, Mrs. E.A. Riney, Coffeyville, Kans. and one son, Arthur J. of Archie, Mo., also one brother, A.B. Remley of Orrick still survive. Mrs. Rowland and her husband were of the eleven charter members of Rockfalls church. Their membership was later transferred to the Orrick church of which she was a member at time of her death. She might properly be termed one of the pioneer mothers of Fishing River bottoms. When she became a bride they were vast tracts of swamp land, almost unclaimed, also acres of timbered hill land unfenced. She saw these gro into fields of grain, meadows and pastures which fed countless herds of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep. She heard the whistle of the first Wabash train that ever ran between Kansas City and St. Louis. She saw the method of passenger change from the ox wagon with seat board to the farm wagon with its spring seat - a luxury, to the spring wagon with its high back seats to the buggy with its cushion seats and the automobile and the airplane. The one unchanging part of her life was her belief in God and faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. The remains were brought to Orrick Wednesday afternoon and a funeral service was held from the Orrick Baptist church by the pastor, Rev. Virgil Young, after which interment was made in the Rowland cemetery northwest of Orrick. F.S. Rowland, Camden funeral director and nephew of deceased had charge of the funeral. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by County Coordinator
