Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - Mrs. Fannie Kirtley (Ball) Rowntree (1882-1986) Unknown newspaper Fannie Kirtley Rowntree Mrs. Fannie Kirtley (Ball) Rowntree, a Richmond native, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 6, 1986, at the Alderwood Convalescent Hospital in San Gabriel, CA, where she had been a wheel chair patient for the past year and a half. She was 101 years and 9 months of age. Surviving her at the nursing home is her sister, Miss Ethel Ball who will be 100 years old in October. Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Betty) Hiller of 4869 Canoga Ave., Woodland Hills, California 91364, and two granddaughters (the children of another daughter) Amy C. Lynch and Betty Jean Allen; five great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Miss Marian Greene and Mrs. Mervin (Dorothy) Mansager of Richmond, are cousins and Mrs. Arthur (Louise Hughes) Chenault of Richmond has been a livelong friend of Mrs. Rowntree and her sister, Miss Ball. Mrs. Rowntree was one of seven children born in Richmond to Elizabeth (Shotwell) Ball and James Edwin Ball, former city attorney and then prosecuting attorney in Richmond in 1882. She was reared at the family home at 526 Lexington Street where she remained until her marriage to John Wallace Rowntree in 1903, at which time they migrated to Los Angeles, California. In 1906, Fannie and John Rowntree moved to San Francisco where they rented an apartment. The next morning the San Francisco earthquake hit. Fannie and her husband, carrying their year-old son, walked through the burning streets looking for friends and relatives. Two days later the Rowntrees fled back to Los Angeles by train. Mrs. Rowntree soon resumed her activities in Los Angeles. A graduate of the Woodson Institute of Music in Richmond, she became prominent in music clubs in the area. As one of the first women to play the piano in radio broadcasts of the early ‘20’s, she presented concerts and accompanied well-known singers of that era over radio station KHJ. She was a member of the Harmonia Club; chairman of the music committee of the Escholtzia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Los Angeles, and was a threetime president of La Camarada Club, one of the oldest women’s clubs in Los Angeles. Cryptside services were held at Rose Hills Memborial Park where Fannie Kirtley Ball Rowntree was laid to rest beside her late husband, John Wallace Rowntree who preceded her in death in 1961.
