Ray County Conservator com. obit: Another Old Citizen Gone Died, at his home on Camden avenue in this city, on Friday afternoon, March 17th, 1893, Joseph Samuel Shoop, in the 77th year of his age. Two years ago Mr. Shoop was prostrated by lagrippe, and had never fully recovered from the effects of this peculiar disease. On Thursday, March 10th he went home from his work complaining of feeling very unwell and at once took to his bed. He grew rapidly worse, and notwithstanding the devoted care of his wife and sons and the skill of the attending physician, death marked him for a victim and his soul passed peacefully into the beyond on Friday. Joseph S. Shoop was born in Washington County, Maryland, May 16th, 1816. When about 15 years of age he went to Waynesboro, Penn., to learn the trade of cabinet making. After remaining there four and a half years he went to Ohio and spent a few months. In October 1837 he came to Missouri, locating at Richmond, and engaged in the manufacture of furniture until 1863, when he purchased a farm one mile south of town and to which he moved. In 1878 he disposed of his farm and removed to town and again engaged in the furniture and undertaking business, in which he continued up to his last illness. In September, 1842, he was united in marriage to Miss Maria Bransford, of Barren county, Ky. Two children were born of this union, but death claimed them both before they had reached years of maturity. His first wife died in 1850, and in April, 1856, he was married to Miss Mary E. Baber, who, with her three children, survive him. The children are Walter T., Miss Cora and Clarence, all of whom are grown. Miss Cora has been in California for nearly two years past. A telegram was sent her last Thursday, notifying her of the dangerous illness of her father and she started home at once, but did not reach here until Sunday evening, two days after his death. Mr. Shoop had been an active, earnest member of the Christian church since 1840, and in his daily life and dealings with his fellow man strove to follow the teachings of his Master. He was one of the original members of the Christian church in this city, casting his lot with that denomination at a meeting held here in March, 1840. Mr Shoop was a quiet, gentle old man, with a wide circle of friends and acquaintance who will sadly miss him. A kind and loving husband and father, a friend to the poor and needy, and a citizen who had the highest conception of his duty to the state and the nation. Impressive funeral services were conducted at the family residence on Camden avenue Tuesday afternoon by Elder J.C. Howell, and the remains were followed to the city cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
