Ray County Conservator com. obit: Death of John A. Stradley. Died in Richmond, Saturday night September 16th, 1893, at 11:30 o’clock, John A. Stradley, of dissipation and exposure. The deceased was in his sixty-fourth year when the summons of death came. He was a native of North Carolina, and was well connected, was a solider in the Confederate army, and served a portion of the time during the war. After the war closed he drifted west, and stopped in Richmond where he remained up to the time of his death. He was a printer by trade and his first work in our city was on the Conservator where he continued for many years. He also occasionally worked on the other two papers in our city, but recently had been working at whatever he could find to do, at times scarcely being able to keep soul and body together. While the old man had his faults and failing and grew to be a wreck, physically, mentally and morally, he had many good traits of character. He was kind, courteous and obliging, and was ever ready to go on an errand for a friend no matter how cold or hot or how dark the storm raged without, and was an enemy only to himself as all who knew him will testify. His remains were conveyed to the city cemetery Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, followed by a large number of the old citizens and young men and boys, who know his virtues as well as his faults, and with deep solemnity deposited his body in the grave, there to remain in peace until the resurrection morn, when all the graves shall give up their dead. Appropriate services were conducted at the grave by Rev. J.E. Petty, of the Baptist church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
