Ray County, Missouri Obituaries - Shields, Dan K., Capt. d. date b. d. cem. nee: pd. p. Ray County Conservator com. obit: Death of Capt. Dan K. Shields The following brief dispatch appeared in the Republic last Saturday: Greenville, Ill., Jan 20. - Capt. Dan K. Shields, a noted temperance lecturer of the states of the Mississippi Valley, died at his house in this city today aged 53 years. He was at the time of his death general organizer of the Northwestern branch of the Order of the Legion of Honor. Capt. Shields, it will be remembered, was in Ray county during the local option campaign in 1887 and accomplished a great work in so thoroughly organizing the temperance people of the county that they achieved a victory at the polls. He was probably the best organizer the temperance workers of the state have ever had in the field, and while he had his faults (and who has not?) he accomplished a wonderful amount of good and there are reformed men all over the state who rejoice that he ever entered the work, and their sincere sympathies go out to his family in their four of greatest grief. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jenna Zunker USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
