Scott County, Missouri Old Commerce Cemetery Also known as the Anderson Cemetery Information on this page is contributed by: Commerce Historical Society, commercemo@clas.net Copyright 1998 Information updated on November 25, 1998 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE COMMERCE HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Will you please take a moment to let us know of any persons buried in the old Commerce/Anderson Cemetery. This will not give us a complete list of all people buried there but by checking your list against this list, it will give us as complete a list as possible. So if you know of someone who is buried there, please let us know. The cemetery needs to be cleaned before we get a new growth of weeds, trees and brush. This requires hard labor, if you will help, please let us know. If you are unable to help with the work but would help financially, we will open an account/trust fund to help with the project. This will help with the project and help with the repairs to the damaged monuments. Your immediate response is appreciated. Please contact COMMERCE HISTORICAL SOCIETY P.O. Box 93 Commerce, Mo. 63742-0093 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE CHARLESTON COURIER dated October 7, 1859: DOMESTIC BURIAL GROUNDS. There is something tender and touching in a domestic burial place--a place in which the ashes of all the family shall mingle together, as they mingled their sympathies while living; and it gives a sweet, sad consolation to the living to know that not even their bodies shall be left and forgotten among strangers. Well has the poet expressed this sentiment: "But me thinks that my sleep will be sweeter, Down close by the home that I love, With the voices of kindred around me, And the songs of the birds above. Yes, bury me in the garden, Under the blooming of flowers; Where the spirit may love to linger, In the calm of the evening hours." The following is a list of the people buried in the Old Commerce Cemetery also known as the Anderson Cemetery. This cemetery is located on the hill overlooking the river on what used to be the north and south side of North street between Missouri Street and Cape Girardeau Street. According to a map printed in London, a settlement was located in Commerce prior to 1760. About 800 people are buried in the cemetery but only a small portion have headstones.
