Scott County, Missouri Obituary: BENJAMIN BENNEFIELD, SR. Information contributed by: Emily Davis, EDavis5389@aol.com =============================================================== Obituary from Commerce, MO Dispatch, dated March 2, 1867 "DIED February 9th, Benjamin Bennefield, Sr., aged 66 yrs. Judge Bennefield was born October 1801, and emigrated to MO. in 1817, from the State of KY. He was among the earlier settlers of Southeast Mo., and by industry perseverance and economy amassed condemnable property. He was for a long time Judge of the County Court of this county, and was several times spoken of as our representative in MO. Legislature. At the commencement of the war, when nearly all the slave owners of the Southeast MO. were allied to the rebellion in sympathy, Judge Bennefield stood up alone and battled for the Union in word and act. The loss of servants had no influence with him when the interest of his country was at stake. His stand for the Union was bold and dignified-censuring quell rebels with patriotic enthusiasm. He suffered all the jeers, jibes and contumely that his rebel neighbors could inflict, and was the recipient of several heavy impressments by rebel commands in his district. He was a good father-a good husband-a good citizen, and a patriotic gentleman." =============================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
