RUTLEDGE LUMBERMAN DEAD -- 16 May 1940 W.J. Taylor had been in Business There for Forty Years. William Jackson Taylor, Rutledge lumber dealer for forty years, died at his home there at 7:15 o’clock last Thursday morning. He was past 82 years old, but still in charge of his business. He was born near Mendon, Ill., March 21, 1858. He came with his parents to Scotland County about 1871, locating near Fort Donaldson. The father of Mr. Taylor, with his wife and two children, emigrated from Ireland. The wife and one child died on the ship and were buried at sea. Later the young man located to Sand Hill on a farm, where he followed the carpenter trade with his brother, James Taylor, for a number of years. About 1899 he purchased the lumber yard in Rutledge, which he operated for more than forty years. When 19 years old he was married, Feb. 17, 1878, to Miss Sophia Snook of near Millport. To them three children were born, one dying in infancy. Mrs. Taylor died January, 1894. He was married to Miss Stella Ryan of Rutledge in December, 1896, and one child was born to this marriage. Mrs. Taylor died in February, 1925. He was married to Mrs. Mattie Scott of Rutledge June 12, 1926, She survives. Besides the widow, Mr. Taylor leaves three children: Alonzo Taylor, Palmdale, Calif; Mrs. Cordelia Cunningham, Seattle, Wash; and Ralph Taylor, National City, Calif. There are eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. There are also two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary Hudnut of Rutledge and Mrs. Lucille Frakes of Macomb, Ill. There are also two surviving brothers, James and John Taylor of Rutledge and a sister, Mrs. Jane Lewis of Sand Hill. A half brother and two half-sisters are dead. Mr. Taylor was always interested in collecting relics and antiques and had many interesting pieces, which he always took pride in showing to his friends. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at Rutledge Monday afternoon, With services by the Rev. Charles Moore of Greenburg. Interment was in Pauline cemetery. The singers were: Mr. Newt Pruett, Mrs. Amsy Kintner, Mrs. Lee Smith, Scott Witt and Lloyd Hicks, with Mrs. Lloyd Hicks as pianist. Pallbearers were: George Hendricks, J.F. Petty, William Lingenfelter, Jewel Mason, Arnold Reynolds and Carl McDonald.
