Margaret was born at the family plantation, Belmont in Goochland County, Virginia on August 25, 1785. She was the sister of Missouri Governor Frederick Bates (1777-1825), U.S. Congressman James Woodson Bates (1788-1846) representing Arkansas Territory and U.S. Attorney General Edward Bates (1793-1869) to President Abraham Lincoln. Margaret married twice in her lifetime. Her first marriage was to John Spears of Virginia. Their marriage took place in Goochland County, Virginia on Dec 10.1805. They were the parents of two daughters. Susan Matilda Ann Spears (1807-1875). Wife of Henry Hatcher (1801-1879). Maria Virginia Spears (1810-1855). Wife of Judge Robert Bentley Frayser (1805- 1875). Margaret married again on March 9,1820 to Dr. Austin Wharton in Powhatan County, Virginia. They had one child, Caroline Matilda Wharton (1822-1827). By 1850, Margaret a widow, was living with her daughter Maria's family on the Frayser farm in St. Charles County, Missouri. After Maria's death in 1855, Margaret lived with Susan and Henry at their farm in St. Charles County. Margaret died at the Hatcher home of old age, on December 10, 1865. She is buried at the Hatcher Burying Grounds. The Hatcher Burying Grounds consist of four graves. Henry A. Chenoweth Died at the of 11 months and 15 days (son of daughter Pamilia Susan (Hatcher) Chenoweth and Captain William E. Chenoweth). Henry Hatcher Born 30 Dec. 1801 Died 7 Jan. 1879 Susan Matilda Ann Hatcher Born 17 May 1807 Died 26 Sept. 1875 Margaret Maria Bates Wharton Born 25 Aug.1785 The graves were part of Henry Hatcher's farm. The location is now part of Lake Saint Louis, St. Charles County, Missouri.
